Another Shotgun suppressor idea....what do you think of this

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

What type of baffel should I try and use?

Another Shotgun suppressor idea....what do you think of this

Post by leo6223 »

EDIT: What type of baffel would work best on this?

I wish I had lot's of time/money/machinery and a FFL/SOT because I think I would be building new class 3 ideas all the time.

Anyway, I'm flirting with the idea of building my own shotgun suppressor. At $200 a pop I don't want to go into the project lightly.

Here's an idea though that I don't know has been addressed before. What do you think of a side by side stoeger? A few points....

The forearm would be cut down by at least 2-3" to provide more room for the can. The baffels would be welded to the barrel and not the inner diameter of the can. The first baffel (closet to the breech) would have the threads on to which the can would attach. Because of the limited space I think I could only do 3 baffels maybe 4.

I would use Aguila mini shells (slugs) which are less than 400 fps so I think this could actually be a 12 ga that would approach the elusive "hollywood quiet".

Things going for it.....closed breech/no moving parts= less gas escape and better suppression. Ability to use mini shells without problems.

Cons...difficult to manufacter the baffels.

What do you think of my "super technical" drawing?

Could this work well?

I was just thinking the other day of how I would go about suppressing a double barrel.

Obviously not wanting to pay $400 for an individual can on each barrel I was thinking along the same lines as you, but more of a lower profile oval-ish sheeth (sp?) covering some ported compartments (that are disscussed in other threads).

Good idea, keep us posted, but damn that can is huge! I like it.

Porting the barrels and packing the space between the barrels and the suppressor tube with Chore Boys is probably your best bet with those subsonic shotshells on a double barreled shotgun. Good luck making the end caps and soldering them to the barrels.

I think you are way off on the ballistics of the minishells. You may be confusing them with the clibri rounds aguila makes in 22 rimfire.
IIRC, the minishell slugs are around 1200 fps.

I have some (crappy) photos of a can like that
But they are in my phone  and i dont know how to get them out

But as soon as i have them i will post them
Its a over and under
the barrels has been shortened and the can look like the one shown
There are baffles AFTER the barrel ends  and they are shooting shots in the gun :?
But it works like a charm ,seams the wad isnt opening as fast as one should think
Its for sporting clays
You can hear it ,it more to muffle the sound

According to your own idea a 45 should be dead silent too. That aperature hole is huge on a 12 gauge.

I put that in quotes to imply a bit of sarcasm....I realize that nothing is going to be that quite (like in the movies) but I do like the idea of a shotgun that would "hissss" and be quiet enough to not need hearing protection.

I think you are right though about the aperature....no matter how effective the can the opeing is just too big not to have a loud sound.

Seen a patent once for a suppressed over/under. All he did was drill a series of tiny holes in both bbls so when one bbl was fired the gases were ported into the other bbl. Dunno how effective that would be, but it would provide some noise reduction with no added weight or bulk, only downside would be some reduced velocity.

the typical way for a shotgun to be suppressed it to get a tube and drill holes in it,that way the shot cup keeps it in, it worked pretty well
