Thoughts on a silent backstop

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Thoughts on a silent backstop

Post by Enfield577 »

Hi Guys
as you know I am new to this and with your guidance trying lots of different ideas, now I would like to make a fixed rig in the shed with a test gun bolted down shooting into a fixed stop and maybe add a decibel meter in there somewhere (I have a cheap one but outside I find a puff of wind send it off the scale)

Now what I really would like is to make the backstop quiet, as you know the bullet impact can be quite loud so it would be good to eliminate this or at least drop the sound down to low level.

Maybe even construct like a large timber suppressor (now there is a thought) lined with foam

I should add I will only be using it for sub-sonic 22s, I did not intend to be loosing off 50 cal in the shed and hoping the thin iron sides stop the round from wandering acoss to the neigbours :D

Cheers

Those mats seem pretty nice. I just built a bullet trap in a tub made out of rubber mulch, ply woo and sand.

I still have not shot at it but will do so tomorrow and I expect it to be pretty load

After seeing those rubber mats I am going to do a tub of just 3 sheets of that with rubber mulch in between. Should be pretty quiet.

You could shoot ballistic gel if you wanted it to completely quiet.

All you have to do is boil it again. If you are just testing the noise it wouldn't be a permanent backstop anyways.

I sprayed rubberized car undercoat on my bullet trap. Not quiet, but it was a step in the right direction. Took out the "twang".

But, it's kinda hard to beat a nice dirt mound for quiet impact.

Duct seal or modeling clay that stays soft is a possibility as well.

A bale of hay works. Shoot it on edge so you don't breaking the twine or wire.

Are you looking to quiet the impact of the round in the trap, quite the discharge of the weapon into the trap, or both?

Thanks for the replies guys, there are some good ideas there.

RPM509 all I want to do is to quiet the impact of the round in the trap, as I will use it to shoot into when testing suppressors in the shed i.e I want to hear the sound of the the suppressor working not the impact of the round. I will stand some distance with the gun, say 6-8ft.

I have a step forward I am getting from a friend a large aluminium transit case for an old electrical item. It is an allu, case (similar to that for camera equipment) it is heavily lined with hi-density foam.

Now the plan is to cut an entry hole, fit secure (maybe angled) backstop in it and try wadding baffles etc in side.

I like to use phone books

For .22, I use a 5 gallon bucket of damp sand covered with a circle cut out of closed cell foam matting. Very quiet. The bullets stop a couple inches into the sand.
Airgunner's doing indoor shooting use a box with a thick layer of plumbers putty.

Soaking them in water also helps.

With the dearth of thick phone books in this new era
a 3' stack of pressed/tied news papers, also soaked, in a
'mini-horse stall frame, has worked
in country garage.
