building a suppressor for ar-15 5.56
building a suppressor for ar-15 5.56
hello everyone, i just joined silencer talk. I've been reading all the threads on making a suppressor for ar-15. I work at a machine shop doing cad models and prints. Me and a buddy of mine here have been talking about making one. I get the basics of how to, and some of these threads are just awesome, but i just can't comprehend all of it. I have the ability to make a very precise, Torrenced, can but need the specific details. Can anyone help?
thanks,
Jay
thanks,
Jay

Fill out form 1 paperwork first and then start reading this site while you wait? Lots of great builds on here. If not in the US and our NFA laws don't apply, consult your local laws and then start reading the silencersmith sub - forum. viewforum.php?f=10
Stupid, stupid NFA items.
Re: building a suppressor for ar-15 5.56
Best to submit the ATF form 1 now as was said above. Five months is plenty of time to work on a drawing.
Decide how big you want it; 1.5x7 inches perhaps?
Material; 304 or 316 stainless works good, need better/tougher for full auto.
Baffles. K, cone or omega? All have advantages and disadvantages.
Weld or thread on end caps? Welded is probably better unless you use cast ammo and need to take it apart for cleaning.
Tube wall thickness; .035" is good for welded end caps, go thicker for threaded.
Attachment; thread on works well, if you are able to, pick a quick disconnect to work with.
Finishing; bead blast it, then paint or leave bare?
Lots of things to decide.

SilencerTalk was a place I could disccuss making registered silencers without being told I was a criminal. That is no longer true. http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=99273

You have much time to decide on final design 1.5x7 or 8 is a good size to put on your form one.If your can is shorter than specified you may amend it with ATF. Lots to learn here and most of us are glad to help you.Try this link to completed builds welcome aboard.

Re: building a suppressor for ar-15 5.56
Hi,
If you make CAD models, it’s not going to be a big deal for you to design your own Can.
Start drawing (no matter how bad the drawings are at the beginning) and we’ll help you to finish up. You are plenty of time while waiting for your papers.
This is the last one I have designed: 1.5x9 (large expansion chamber due to Customer request). 7 Stepped Baffles (60 degree cones in/out and inner cone for a 1 inch countersink). All SS. 28 ounces. I prefer 1.5x8.5 and 8/9 Baffles.
Best,
Paul

Thanks everyone for the welcome, and tips and links. I will post again on this subject when I get some pics and more info.

Read the Baffle Pictures thread to get an idea of what manufacturers are doing. They are the ones that can do R&D. We cannot. The best results we can get are from copying them.

Welcome aboard. Just go the the silencersmith section until your eyes bleed and then keep going. There is allot of good info and some not so good. After a while you will be able to tell the difference.

Re: building a suppressor for ar-15 5.56
I would personally use a .065 tube in lieu of .035 as previously noted, but that is just me. Fill out your forms, Read the pages and see what others are doing. Lots of good .223 designs here

Looks good. What tubing size did you use? What is the finished weight?

Spectacular!
Just finished up my first .223 can, it has nothing on yours. But, it was also my first adventure on a lathe!
What does it sound like!? Looks great anyway!
