Never Argue With A Marine

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Never Argue With A Marine

Post by Historian »

Discussing chamber pressures between a .45 and .22 on a 5" barrel
with my Marine friend.

I remembered reading that the .22 had a higher chamber pressure, thus the
barrel thickness. Of course he disagreed. [ I can forgive him at
his advanced age of 77. :) :) ]

Would appreciate any actual numbers. A case of Sam Adams beer
is on the line.

From this what would be the derived nominal pressure in say a Sparrow
during firing?

Thanks.

Looks like this chart puts the .22lr at about 24,000psi and the .45 colt at 14-16,000.

I'm not so good with the advice, but could I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

There's a myth that the .22LR has an extremely high cartridge pressure. It is high but there are many other rounds that are higher.

You have to watch arguing with ex military. I was put in my place by a guy in the Army because I argued that the 5.56 round doesn't tumble in flight. One of the biggest dicks that I've ever come across.

Thank you for info. I shall toast each of you with the
Sam Adams that I won. And since as
the years progress one has fewer remaining friends
I shall share half the case with him. :)

Ex-military are well known for tumbling in flight with higher than normal chamber pressures. Beer changes the stumble into a swagger and lowers our muzzle blast into long stories of days gone by.I raise my glass to one and all who argues with old soldiers as we still long for the fight.

Have you seen a Walther P22 barrel thickness, cheap BB guns have better barrels.

Great point.

For historical comparison, my pre-War [ 1930's for our younger brethren ]
Webley Senior .22 air pistol's barrel is slightly thicker than
the new .22 liners available.

My Gov. Issue NM .45, Frankford Arsenal, 1965 still fits my
hand like the proverbial glove and is an extension of myself.

I have happily given it to my son who, I am proud to say, outshoots
me with it.

[ Never good with arrows or muskets. Just #2 - 8" Randalls. :) ]
