Common K-baffle Terminology

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Common K-baffle Terminology

Post by sst4270 »

During my research I've come to find a lot of different terms used when referring to the various, but same, features of a K-baffle.
This continues to cause confusion when discussing designs especially within this Silencersmithing sub-Forum.
I see lots and lots of back and forth posts just trying to get straight exactly what feature someone is talking about.
I thought it would be beneficial if we had a common reference point so I've created a drawing that calls out the various
features of a typical K-baffle. My intent is for this to be a work in progress until such time as the moderators and more experienced smithers
can come to agreement on the terms. Then we could lock it down and create a sticky.
I've left plenty of room on the drawing for notes and extra terms to be added.
That way, at least within this forum, everyone would be on the same page when describing a design AND someone new like myself could be referred to this page as sort of a K-baffle glossary.

So if you could please provide your feedback of what you think each term should be called:
For example:
A = Cone
C = Rim... or whatever

And I will update the drawing accordingly once a concensus has been reached for each term.

Obviously feel free to change my terms as you see fit. These are just the terms I have been using.

Regards,

SST

PS I realize that there are many different offshoot K-baffle designs, and that is part of the cause for all the confusion. So even though I think I've captured the most common features in my drawing I know there will still be some confusion. My hope is that this thread will help to cut down on some of it.

F is technically part of the slanted sidewall, as is feature D, or baffle porting.
Feature G oriented as you describe may result in a Loud sound :lol: Circular groove in baffle face.
Feature C is clearly not to the rear and I think could be described as the side or edge adjacent to the baffle face.
You need to add Dater hole's & Mouse holes to your list along with skirt edge as a minimum.
E: only description #2 applies.
Posted for clarity and yuk's it's good that your are trying to learn something.

I believe the technical term for H is doohickey.

H- Diverting Cone. Though here it doesn't seem an intentional (pronounced) creation, more just a result of the cutting of the trench.

I just call "F" the vent.

The ball end plunge off center just below the bore on the front face I call the "scoop"

The names I used where in Dutch and we all know that would not work so I changed some to what was used above.

Below is what I use for K Terminology

your diagram would be better if you had put the measure for a .22 silencer :lol:

On some jobs I have, we are testing some other models as well.
This one is going into an integral Buckmark.

Also in a special IntegralSubSonic Centerfire rifle.
