On the last episode of RJF a few great moments
of teachable machining issues caught my eye:
1) Will was hammering with a large chisel or punch
with a mushroomed top of potential steel shrapnel.
One of the first safety warnings I got in the machine
shop was always to grind down the overhangs less you
send a piece of steel flying into an eye.
I hope none here are so careless.
2) I was astonished when Will proceeded to hand thread a 'one of a kind'
barrel free hand, clamping it in the vise and eyeballing the
die. Surprise, he plucked the duck and had to have his
real gunsmith circumcise the botched section and start the thread a few
turns. Now friend Will completed the threading. Didn't anyone ever teach him
to hold the barrel in the lathe and press the die with the spindle to get
an accurate alignment?
3) Kris, in rare charming moment, was fixing for his classy Southern Lady grandmother's
birthday, her W. Collath & Sohne Drilling shotgun. He also performed accurate drilling
with the firearm's piece held in a vise
and hand drilled the hole. Ever hear of a drill press?
From the above examples I have sorrowfully concluded that I shall not have
them work on my Rolex Sea Dweller any time soon.
I must admit it was fun to see brave Will tossed out of the helo.
I failed in suppressing the joyous images of some political figures taking his place, without
a chute, of course.

Bunch of hacks. Would not let those guys repair my trash can.

Thank you for feeding my unrepentant juvenile humor.

Re: Red Jacket Report
Everything they touch is 'one of a kind' or a 'game changer'.
I think they should just stick to demilling AK parts kits and moving them to US receivers. Pretty hard to screw that up.

Jeeez. They had the barrel in the lathe and still finished the threads with a die? That's beyond incompetent. Let's start the job right and then deliberately botch it when it's 90% done!Historian wrote:had to have his real gunsmith circumcise the botched section and start the thread a few turns. While I truly enjoy reading these acts of stupidity I have to note I can not watch the show anymore! The examples given are why. Having been around a few shops in my life these people are worse then amateurs as they tend to LEARN from here mistakes but these folks repeatedly make the same err over and over. As mentioned they have all the machining right there but are to ignorant to use it for what is was made for.

Who was this company that RJ was making the shotguns for? Are they real or just show.
Also, notice how Will's hair keeps changing through the shows, color, style and length.
It seems they are trying to clean this boy up for the show but can't find the right look.
He is a game changer.

Re: Red Jacket Report
Whilst I am aware that what you see on TV is not always (ever) the truth, if I had an engineering/gunsmithing company that was being represented on TV I would make bloody sure that what they showed was spot on.
I could only conclude then that if RJ let this be shown they either don't know what is required or could not care less what their customers see. Either way not a company that that I would comfortable dealing with.
I do wonder though whilst we find the bad bits to talk about (and it seems there are way too many) and people who you can trust like Bender have seen their products and are not impressed, RJ have made a heap of money so they must have done somethings right.

I watch the show mostly as a warning of what not to do.
Anyone notice that they make a lot of parts "fit" using a hand grinder and a hammer?
I remember the show where they took a demilled 20mm cannon and welded it back together to make a functional firearm . . . personally, I don't want to be anywhere near it when it's being fired.
