Washers as wipers?

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Washers as wipers?

Post by kingjamez »

As I'm designing my form 1 .22 suppressor. I've read the ATF letter that says non-manufactures may replace wipers in suppressors. Can I design my suppressor to use steel washers as wipers in the blast baffle of the monocore? Since this form 1 is a one shot deal, I'd like to have something in the front of the stack be replaceable when it wears out.

Here is the idea: A slot cut into the monocore that a standard washer will fit into, and be solidly held in place.

Wipes are worthless.
They have been used in the past before current technologies.
I was issued a hush-puppy as a youth and while they did work the accuracy was the pits and you had to replace the wipes every 20 rounds.
A better designed can will out perform a wipe can every time.
Why waste your time on 1960's performance.
Use a K or Omega.

I'm using the steel wipers as blast baffles to take the majority of the wear, the rest of the can will have normal baffles.

So you simply want to use the washers as sacrificial baffles in-front of your regular baffles. There are legal concerns with having spare baffles laying around and replacing them by yourself.

Wipes actually contact the bullet as it pushes through the wipe. This is why they are usually made of a flexible material. IF the wipes were made of metal the bullet would be deflected causing bullet strikes to important parts.

I think what he's getting at is can he design his blast baffle so that a typical steel washer can be used as a user-replaceable part legally.

I have not read the law but I doubt that steel washers are replaceable per BATFE the consumable elastomer wipe is.The washer is a baffle not a wipe.

A design built in stainless steel will outlast you.

I would be most concerned about temperature effects on a loosely fitted, low quality washer causing it to shift and maybe resulting in wipe strikes.

There is a company that was advertising that their 22 can used a sacrificial baffle, more like a flat blast baffle. I do believe that you had to send the can back to them for the swap of the part however.

I do not believe that the ATF will allow an individual to replace any part on a form1 but for wipes and by wipes I mean the traditional kind ie plastic.

ATF does not consider METAL washers as wipes. Wipes are plastic, rubber or porous materials. Been that way for decades.

As it was said by the Cpt. A metal washer is a baffle not a wipe.

A wipe is consumable, a metal washer is not.
