Thanks. Texas does a Tag deal for anything over 28 IIRC. You get one tag per licence BUT if you fill out lots of info on where your got your tagged Red and send it in to the state you will get another tag back so you get a Max of two oversized Reds. Pretty good deal IMHO.

Small craft advisory. I canceled. I don't need to be in 6 foot waves on my first trip.

If you were planning on going in your 17' boat, you don't really need to be out of sight of land in any weather!

No, my boat is too small for Tuna fishing. I was going to go in a friend's boat.

Got a roughly 100lb amberjack once, long fight. 4ft barracuda the same day. In freshwater my biggest was a ~12lb snook that measured like 30-some inches.

Lol, we waited till we got to the dock. I wish I could find a good photo of that trip, all I have are in a tiny format from a old computer.

I'm on the far left and honestly I found that it was more work than fun. We were using stand-up 50lb rigs with no shoulder harness since the captain had no experience with us and didn't want us going over the side with a big fish.

That would be a nice smallmouth for my part of the country. My biggest fish was a 28 lb. blue cat.The last couple of years I've been using ultra light gear to try and get a line class record.

If Cortland bought one of these reels he could save on monogramming.

Rsilvers, You might want to consider getting some Boga Grips.

All the fishing guides down here in FL use them and I think they are fantastic!

Allows you to handle and weigh the fish with out harming it.

Ok. What is the deal with those? There is one original called "Boga" and then there are copies for 1/5 the price but they are knockoffs?

Clone: $29
Clone with digital scale: $50
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... =cat601233

Original with spring-based scale:
$119

The clones seem to have poor reviews and I don't do clones anyway, so I will get a 30lb model from a local dealer.

Knock-offs are real cheap and don't have the same quality. My friend has a clone and it is about half the weight as a real Boga and runs real rough after some saltwater exposure.

Boga Grips are AWESOME, but remember they do not float :(
