Favorite caliber for fishing!

So what’s your favorite caliber for fishing? I usually find that a 5 round burst of 147 grain 9mm from my MAC 10 does the trick if the fish is within a foot or two from the surface.

Fast light rounds seldom do anything since the water can’t build up enough pressure to crush the fish near the surface and the bullet just disintegrates anyway.

What are you guys using?

Dan

An old timer told me about using 22 short for trout. He said if you put the muzzle in the water, just a little bit of it in, right over the fish, the concussion knocks the fish out. No bullet damage to the fish, he just floats up stunned. Also said it wasn't too loud. 22 short through a long barrel isn't bad anyway. The muzzle in the stream probably does take the edge of what little noise there is.

A pair of hip waders would probably hold a youth sized gun quite nicely.

S&W .357 Mag works well for Trout, they just fly right out of the stream - well, I mean, that's what I have heard

When I was 20 a mate showed me how to trout fish with his 270 but the first occasion was when we were wading a river with full packs and he shot a trout between his legs. Strangely enough he became a bank manager and settled down never to venture into the bush again . He knew many tricks . He also on the same trip shot a possum in the dark about 10ft above our heads and we were showered with possum meat and entrails. Life was different in 1976.

I use my p22/outback II combo for salmon pretty often. When they are banked I pop a round in the head and the fight is over.

You guys are pussies. Fishing is best done with a Kabar. That's how Brock Sampson does it.

No fishing for long, it was my favorite in my teens and got tanned every summer holidays, missing the great times. :P

Once you pierce the water surface with the muzzle, you minimize surface tension.
A subsonic FMJ RN or SpirePoint would work well.
I don't think that 60mm HE would leave a very good texture to the meat. M-80, cherry bomb, flash powder tube would all create a pressure wave to stun the fish. This is really the goal isn't it? A projectile would probably wound the fish but not kill it unless properly placed.

Dupont spinner

works wonderfully...

since weighs 16 ounces sinks fast enough for concussion...

since it's got a 5 second fuze--- you can time the toss...

just don't wait too long to see the fish before tossing....

Benjamin Sheridan Air rifle pumped up to the max. No pellet, barrel in the water. The concussive wave brings up quite a few fish. Works best if you stick some bait around the muzzle to lure them closer. ;)

Only shot one fish that I have a photo of, it was in a snakes mouth.

One of my 45 shot loads killed them both.
