Threading a Ruger American?

Post by Bobaganusche »

I have a Ruger American rifle in 30-06 that I use for deer hunting/target shooting. I was wondering if it is possible to thread the barrel on one of these for my Specwar 762. If it is possible, would having the suppressor on there mess with the barrel harmonics and make the gun less accurate? As it is I can pretty much punch the middle out of the target at 100 yards with it on a good day.

Ruger offers the American with a threaded barrel in many calibers, chances are it is possible to thread you barrel but it depends on the OD at the muzzle and the chosen thread pattern.

Hanging a suppressor off the end of a tapered barrel is guaranteed to change POI so it's not going to hit in the same place suppressed as it does unsuppressed.

Harmonics is likely to have an impact on the pattern it prints with multiple shots and the POI shift from first, cold barrel shot to second follow up shot may be amplified by the suppressor. Trying different ammo may make things better or worse from your existing favorite ammo.

I don't know any way to predict the exact amount of change without just threading it and trying it.

You might even be able to buy a threaded barrel for it from Ruger or another supplier then you don't have to mess with your original barrel at all. This would give you the option of returning to a known good state if you don't like the suppressed results.
