Long range ammo

Post by Sdustin »

Hello I enjoy long range .22 lr shooting. I'm talking about 100-150 yards. I can hit my 4" and 2" spinning targets pretty well if the wind isn't too bad. I'm looking for what would be the best ammo for that. I've been using rem golden bullet I found a chart a while ago and it had the best BC for the two rounds I had so that what I went with.

My rifle is a mossberg .22 bolt action with a 16.5" barrel threaded and a cheap center point 3-9x30 mil dot scope. I also have a bipod on it.

The guys who meet on the weekend for matches mostly shoot Eley.

Most of the ones I've met who don't shoot Eley shoot Wolf Match Target.

At 100-150 yards consistent muzzle velocity is probably more important than BC.

When the smallbore shooters here run out of match grade eley/wolf, CCI std is the go-to cheap round. I'm waiting for things to get so bad we all start shooting Remington golden.

It's really bad in my area, the only ammo in bulk I've been able to find in .22 has been win and rem and then I've only found them twice since new town. And I've been able to find snake shot but that's it. This sucks cause .22 was what I got a lot of practice with. I've been able to find and afford more .308 FMJ than anything around me.

I'm thinking things will get better soon then go nuts again around election time 2014. So once they get better I'll be stocking up. I know I'll be getting as many ar15 lowers as rifles I'll eventually want.

Ah.

Sorry, I don't put bulk ammo in the same class as serious or even semi-serious accuracy or long range ammo.

Bulk is for just tearing up tin cans or aggravating squirrels, I'm willing to spend a little more when I want to work on developing marksmanship.

I'm not too unhappy with the bulk ammo at range. Although I haven't used any "match" ammo either it may be the case of I don't know what I'm missing. That said I do notice that my stock 10-22 and cheap ammo flat out sucks next to my mossberg bolt action. If I ever quit talking and actually put my paper work in for the SS sparrow I've been drooling over I'll spring for a CZ bolt gun or savage.

Most likely the savage since they are American and some models come already threaded.

If you can find it SK standard is a very good quality ammo. I shoot playing cards in half at 50 yards with the stuff out of my semi modified 10/22

What do you have done to your 10-22. Mine is bone stock with bulk ammo it's s--t for accuracy.

Put a Kidd barrel on it did a trigger job and put it in a free float thumb hole stock.
