Prarie dog rifle???

Post by shark31 »

Looking for a good prarie dog rifle for my father.

I was looking for something around $500-$750.

I was looking at either .22-250, .223, .204 Ruger, or .220 Swift. If anyone has any other calibers that would serve well please include them. I am looking at anything that will be flat shooting and very accurate out to 300-400yds.

He has an AAC Ranger to use on the rifle, which is why I mentioned those calibers.

Savage 22-250 no doubt, I shoot 400 + yds at 6" plates with no problem. I would look at their varmint rifles with a Leupold 6.5X20 VX III LR/T. Your love it, good luck. I use 55 gr. HPBT Sirra's very accurate and stable at about 3700 fps. with is plenty fast.

Another vote for a Savage 22-250. The 12fv can be had for around $450 to $500. The stock is junk, but that is easily fixable.

I love mine. I own any crow within 300 yards.

Going off Hornady's numbers the .204 Ruger with a 32 grain bullet has less drop and less wind deflection than 22-250 with a 40 grain bullet. A half inch for both at 300 yards. The .220 Swift is 1.2% faster with the same 40 grain bullet which gives it a 5% advantage at 300 yards. However still worse than the .204 Ruger.

The .204 32 grain Vmax has a BC of .205
The .224 40 grain Vmax has a BC of .2

Code: Select all

          .204 R 22-250 .220 Swift
         (4225fps) (4150fps) (4200 fps)
Drop, Windage in inches with a 10 mph crosswind
100
200 -1.2, -4.3 -1.3, -4.4 -1.2, -4.3
300 -5.9, -10.1 -6.4, -10.6 -6.1, -10.4
400 -15.7, -19.3 -16.8, -20.4 -16.2, -20.0
Just some food for thought.

.204 Ruger is about $3-4 cheaper per box of 20 than 22-250 according to Midwayusa.com for Federal and Hornady ammo.

.223 is about the same price.
