5.45 or 7.62
I'm wanting to get an AK sometime soon, I like the cheaper price and other benefits of the 5.45, but I also like the availability of the 7.62. Are the mags for both the same, or is there a different mag for the 5.45?

It seems to me that there are ups and downs to both. The 5.45 is currently cheaper to shoot with the surplus of corrosive military ammo that is available in the US. I would say that the 7.62 mags typically cost less and there seems to be more of them than the 5.45 mags.
Another difference would be recoil, the 5.45 has less felt recoil. While the 7.62 may be a bigger round the 5.45 is no slouch. If I were going to get one It would be the 5.45 simply based on the ammount of ammo you could get for a relativly small amount of money as compared to some other calibers.

That's kinda where I'm at too. I like how cheap the ammo is, but if the mags are prohibitive it may not be worth it. Honestly the recoil of my SKS in 7.62 isn't bad at all so I doubt it'd bother me that much.mcmillanman5 wrote:It seems to me that there are ups and downs to both. Agreed. I've owned several variants in both 5.45 and 7.62 and I always seem to come back to the 7.62. Yes there is a little more felt recoil but something about a .30 caliber hole makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.dtom29 wrote:If you only have one AK it should be 7.62. After your second(Oh yes, there will be a second) Then go for a 5.45........JMO

It's going to be hard to find mags for just about anything right now since AK and AR mags are being snapped up left and right.Reed503 wrote:Have had a 7.62 for quite a while, just got my 5.45 the other day. Its been hard to find mags for it though...

st33vo, if you already have an SKS, why not stick with the 7.62. It is nice to have multiple guns in one cartrige IMO. Just more economical and efficient when it comes to buying bulk ammo. This is what's kept me from buying a 5.45, having other guns in 7.62. Just don't want to start buying another round.
