Glock
G19 or G23 compact
G26 or G27 subcompact

If you get a .40 S&W in the G23 or G27, a simple conversion barrel will enable you to also shoot 9mm or .357 Sig as well.

Found a couple used USP compacts for around $500. Im kind of a slutty whore when it comes to HK stuff. Any one carry a USP compact in a crossbreed holster?

F--k the HK if your on a budget. Get the glock some mags and ammo ALL day ANY day vs the HK for maybe $500 today $700 the next. Also parts are easy to find if you need them.

P.s I'm a bias and a Glock fanboy 8)

S&W M&P seems popular, although no longer $350-400 which made it a great value

I was told to pick your caliber first... then see what was available at what price.

I ended up with a used G27. Never a problem, lightweight, and compact.

Here is an analysis I did when choosing my own carry selection.....

Oops. No way to post a pdf....

Personally I only use glocks, but have several friends with XDs and I like them just fine.

Unless you have an HK budget. In that case, get two Glocks.

I like to buy factory refurbed Glocks. They run about a hundred bucks less than new and are, for all intents and purposes, new guns. They have a lifetime warranty from Glock. I've bought a couple for $400 (19 gen 2) to $450 (21 gen 3 with night sights). With a refurb you can get a Glock 19 and a hundred rounds of hollowpoints and a holster for right around the $500 target price. Hard to beat that.

Do you have a good source for reburbed Glocks, or is it just a find 'em as you run across them?

I "find 'em" as I run across them. Either that or use the LEO discount thru Glock.

I'm not a Glock fan, don't own one but have to agree if price is a major consideration Glock provides some of the best value for the money. I view Kahr as a good second option but you won't get an equivalent Kahr NIB for as cheap as a Glock.

Sorry I didn't see this when you posted it.

I find them where I find them. Gunbroker has been good. There is a dealer out there somewhere who carries bunches of refurbed Glocks but that info was lost in my computer crash.

I would and always think asking others what is a good carry firearm is at best a basic starting point. If you are going to carry it then YOU have to be able to be able to have it on you person all day unseen YOU will have to be able to draw it well from whatever position you are in when it is needed and YOU will have to be able to use it well.
