P226 vs P220 sound reduction.

Post by rxmaninva »

Hey all, I'm going to the gun store tomorrow and I am trying to choose between the threaded SIG P226 and the threaded P220. I like the added capacity of the 9mm, but Ive been told that the 45 is alot more quiet suppressed than the 9mm. I was curious what everyones opinion on the different in sound reduction between the 2 suppressed calibers. I only have cans on my 22lr and 223 remmington. thanks in advance for the input.

I have heard wise men on this forum say that as a general rule the smaller the bore the better the suppression but that general rule is only 50% of the equation.

Overall total suppression is 50% bore size, 50% ammo and 50% host meaning if any one of the 3 is a bad choice suppression sucks.

There are .45 ACP can/host/ammo combinations out there that will be almost as quiet as the quietest 9mm, but not quite, only almost.

I would suggest you do your own research looking at the available test data and finding people with cans who will let you shoot them.

Try looking at the basics first if you wish. Like the fact that most "standard" 45ACP ammo (230 FMJ) is loaded to subsonic velocity while most 9mm is not. That leaves you with 147 grain which is generally "considered" subsonic. 115/124 grain 9mm aren't.

45 tends to work great suppressed due to the fact it starts out S L O W.

Its nice to be able to go buy whatever ammo for a 45 and have it work fine in a surpressed handgun.

Its not as easy to find 147 grain 9mm. (At least at wally world)

Some folks may give you all kinds of hightech answers and thats fine. I just prefer the simple route. Bignslow always works better than smallnfast suppressed.
