I was pretty sure charcoal fluid would work, but it did not. At some point I will try Coleman Camp Fuel.

That is still $32 a gallon. It may work though, but it depends what fraction of the distillate they took. The charcoal fluid I had was within the range of Naphtha but I guess not a high enough vapor pressure.

Coleman Camp Fuel is $10 a gallon at Walmart.

I'm pretty sure coleman camp fuel (white gas) is WAY more volatile than lighter fluid and probably not a great idea to use in the hand warmer (will probably all burn off or evaporate too fast).

I have one of these handwarmers, and while it works well, it's a bit of a hassle to use and I find myself just wearing gloves. Though I've never had much of a problem with cold hands when wearing good gloves.

I have it in my chest pocket now. If I put an outer jacket over that, it dispenses heat into my jacket.

Have a red mark on my chest - burned it. IR thermometer shows this gets up to 200 F.

Whoa... You guys are making me nervous with this "more power" talk relative the device. The lower the fuels vapor pressure, the more readily it vaporizes... the hotter it burns, more volatile, more energy... this picture is getting scary.

Go with the battery powered heating stuff.

AFAIK Ronsonol used to be Naphtha, or at least mostly Naphtha, before Zippo bought them. Now it's just Naphtha flavored.

Just tested it. Ran it until it died a few times. Then filled up with "1/2" a tank of fuel (that is what they recommend for refills) and it ran for 8 hours without being in the bag. If you put it in the bag, it will probably run longer and at a lower temp.

Living in North Pole, I can tell you at certain temps drinking any alcohol is dangerous.

But if you let the liquid become cold soaked at 30 below and take a drink, it will be your last. Instant espoh - S___ thoart freeze.

I used the Jon-e hand warmer with its fuel for years and in a pinch used lighter fuel which worked ok.

I once had a dry fuel hand heater that opened like a hard eyeglass case, I believe the fuel sticks were compressed charcoal, I didn't care for it as it had hot spots and uneven heating.

I have and still use both types.
The liquid types tell you to only use their liquid fuel. Its not because they want to sell more fluid but because its actually designed to last longer than lighter fluid. Also you never fill the unit or you will get leakage when the entire unit heats up. You only ned fill the unit up 2 fingers.
Example: fill up a zippo and ligh it and leave it lit for several minuets. The fuel heats up and expands then starts to leak out engulfing the lighter.

The solid fuel ones....Heat very well but to get maxmum heat you need to light both ends.

Whatworks well too is military reusable hand warmers.
Break up inner material, pour in some water, kneed and the tings gets warm. When it dies, you let dry and start again.
