Here in Colorado, gas went from $2.39/gal to $2.59/gal this week; and I noticed gas stations here locally raised prices to $2.69/gal today.
Gas prices here have gone up 30 cents a gallon due to the refineries in Houston temporarily shutting down.
I'm guessing that these rising gas prices are similar across the country.

Yep.
My prices mirror yours.
And they're usually .25 more cents a gallon in this county than any county bordering it.

I don't care what your chart says
Re: That was quick, rising gasoline prices due to Houston flooding
Every time the third coast floods or get hits with a disaster fuel prices spike.
More so and faster when it's Texas.
The Colonial pipeline shut down and 13 or more refineries shut down.
Just think what would happen if Texas quit you.

The US has the largest oil reserve in the world. We can't tap into a few barrels to keep the price down? I mean, we, the taxpayers, paid for it once already

If you don't have the capacity to refine it into fuel it doesn't matter how much oil you have.
If it makes you feel any better we refine a lot of the fuel that is consumed world wide and the impact on the third coast will be felt far outside our borders.

Don't mess with Texas.

Re: That was quick, rising gasoline prices due to Houston flooding
The production output of US refineries rarely hits 100%. There are other refineries, across the country and in the coast region, which can pickup the slack. Tapping into our reserve is a quicker way to get the crude oil to them, instead of waiting for ocean tankers. Also, because of the NGSR, there are always 1M barrels of gasoline stored between Maine and NY. Hurricanes are the exact reason for this specific reserve.

So what you're saying is it doesn't matter what pipeline or terminal the remaining operational refineries are connected to, just spin them up to 100% and the fuel will find its way to the stations somehow and price won't be impacted much in the process?

Re: That was quick, rising gasoline prices due to Houston flooding
I'm saying that there's reserves and refineries all over the country. Even already refined reserves (gasoline) strategically placed to serve us in the NE. There's no need to send or remove any real quantities to the flood zone so their infrastructure is irrelevant.

That silly capitalism, it makes no sense.

Yes, make more by selling less, supply and demand.
Here's an overview of all the operating refineries 2012-2017 with their capacities and idle time.

My dept. designs and sells Industrial gas & oil burners. These are in the 200MMBtu/hr range. We keep an eye on things like fuel prices. Back in '08, we did a lot of strategic shifting when oil hit the roof and demand went towards NG. The surge from Harvey should be subsiding this week. Time to start selling short
