Well, that might make some people happy, but getting a letter from the ATF asking if the responsible person on my FFL renewal was deceased caught my wife by surprise.
There's a first for everything.

I'd like to see the letter. I have never heard of ATF contacting an heir before.

Tell them yes, then suggest they all shoot themselves in order to continue the conversation.

I have had that happen 3 times since I got my FFL back in 2006, the first time was funny, because my wife called me to let me know I was deceased and asked if I could drop by that little place in DC and pick up some stuff from a little deli she fell in love with while I was stationed at the Pentagon. She faxed a copy of it to me, and I showed it to my commanding officer and he just looked at me and said "We could only hope"!

My Question is: Why are they contacting Spouses instead of the Named Party?

Seems like they should contact the actual Person, not ask someone else if you are alive. Maybe ask for a current Proof of Life, like DL or Passport? Of course those are 6-10yrs, so renewed less often than a FFL. Hmmmm. Seems like a phone Interview is the only way to be certain.

As I was in the military and not stationed where our home was many times the FFL license has my home address on it because my shop is here as well, my wife was the notify person in case. She however is a business partner in my business as I am in her business. We also have a trust that has her as well as our kids involved in it because the various NFA items that I own.

Sometimes it is pretty amazing the resources the BATF can come up with, I also live in a small community and we are friends with the BATF agent and his wife, he served with me back in the 90's before he retired from the military and went to work for BATF.
