Oconee County Deputy Killed in the Line of Duty

Post by 3101 »

Hi all,
I wanted to let you know that this past Thursday, Deputy David Gilstrap, 49 years old and the husband of my executive assistant was killed after being struck by a car directing traffic in front of our Primary School. David had a head injury that was not survivable, and he died in the hospital some 15 hours after being hit.
This was the first ever LOD death for the Oconee County Sheriff's Office. David had worked for me for 4 years, he worked in Athens Clarke Co for the previous 12.
David had two children, including a son who is serving in the Army and had just returned from Iraq.
We had a memorial service for David Sunday.
In order for David's family to collect all his benefits, there are mounds of paperwork and certificates that must be submitted to the State and Federal Government.
The 62 year old driver claimed she did not see David in the road....the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the death, and we are properly playing no part in the investigation.

Sorry. Very recently in a similar instance, a local cop and president of my rod and gun club was hit and killed by a driver flipping through a stack of CDs while he was directing traffic. It is not what people think of as the most dangerous aspect of the job but when you think about it, cars whizzing by are like bullets.

My condolences. My prayers and thoughts will be with the family and the department.

This may be too soon, but if a trust is set up for the family, please post the information. I would be proud to make a contribution.
