Highway Radar Van Operator Shot to Death in Ariz.

Surveillance van operator shot to death on Arizona highway to photograph speeders for police
PHOENIX April 20, 2009 (AP)

Authorities say a man was shot to death while operating a state police photo radar surveillance unit along a Phoenix highway.

Police say the 51-year-old man died at a hospital after the shooting Sunday evening.

He worked for RedFlex Traffic Systems Inc., which has a contract with the Arizona Department of Public Safety to operate photo radar enforcement vehicles on state highways.

Police are looking for a suspect vehicle, which was captured by the video equipment in the RedFlex SUV.

Police officer should enforce traffic laws. NOT non-police officers or cameras.

There's lots of money out there to be extorted by these private companies taking on the role of law enforcement. They know it's a real cash cow and LEOs often support such means because they get a small part of the revenue, while not having to expend additional funds for the private enforcement.

Good thing Montana just outlawed automated traffic enforcement devices.

If you want to enforce the law, then hire more local law enforcement officers. They can do more than just send tickets through the mail.

I was looking forward to fucking with the cameras though.

I'll bet that the vehicle used in the shooting was stolen.

It sucks that someone died, but after seeing how they used those cameras labor day weekend (one camera every 10 miles on I-40 and I-10), I'm not opposed to seeing the trucks vandalized in such a way that they are inoperable.

I wonder about being able to purchase part of a highway or road. If a photo radar van were parked in front of my house or business, I'd call to have it towed.

Well generating revenue is not without consequences. This will probably keep happening until the Government stops attempting to "save us from ourselves"
There is an 11 to 17 minute response time to a 911 call. You can either choose to put effective rounds on target, neutralizing the threat, or try to find a telephone. The person who killed you while you were dialing 911 will have enough time to cook a frozen pizza before the "Badged Historians" show up to draw the chalk line.

I have noticed alot more radar traffic enforcement over the last month in my area. It could be a coincidence but it is all on the roads I normally travel and I see them everyday now.

My first thought is that it's aimed at increasing revenue.

cellphones and slow drivers in the left lanes cause most of the problem on the highways. Enforce laws subverting that.

I'm sorry that someone got shot, but I have to nod in agreement with T on this one.

not a police officer so it doesnt matter he didnt go home safe? :P

I think that private companies running radar vans etc is complete horse s--t, if you take it to court, does the company show up instead of a police officer? or a police officer and a company rep?

Which is why I only see police out writing tickets during nice sunny days with dry roads and light traffic.
