"A hit of Benadryl before a long trip is pretty standard practice, though it may not win you Mother of the Year award (except maybe from your fellow passengers on a cross-country flight). "

I am shocked that some parents do this regularly. I am very hesitant to give my daughter any medicine, although sometimes it seems necessary.

One of our kids would fall asleep in the car, so almost every night for a long time I would take him for a drive at bedtime.
I wonder if driving put him more at risk than Benadryl?

I used to get hot brandy as a kid. Course that was mainly for when I was sick, but there were a few cases where I just wouldn't sleep and got that.
My intelligence is like a suppressed rimfire pistol. You may not be able to hear it, but it certainly always hits its mark.

I consider this a form of child abuse, jmo.More disturbing: One in 12 moms confessed to regularly dosing their kids with sleep-inducing medication, just to get some peace and quiet on a normal night.
Moms wrote to us anonymously:
"I give my younger daughter Benadryl and Tylenol almost every night - she loves the taste and begs for it."
The line where the kid begs for the Benadryl and Tylenol gets me, she's turning the kid into an addict.

my mother gave me benedryl a lot when I was young; bad allergies
between that, low blood pressure running in the family & the way I grew up I can be pretty mellow
A little tea is required to elevate my blood pressure at times
but I see it as harming the body if you are giving it for other reasons than it's intended, let along regularly

Re: Wow, 20% of parents admit to drugging their kids
Over the counter "Sleep Aids" are Diphenhydramine (Benedryl). So it is technically being giving for the "right" reason. But the U.S. National Library of Medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000704/) says:
Diphenhydramine should not be used to cause sleepiness in children.
If you are giving diphenhydramine or a combination product that contains diphenhydramine to a child, read the package label carefully to be sure that it is the right product for a child of that age. Do not give diphenhydramine products that are made for adults to children.
Before you give a diphenhydramine product to a child, check the package label to find out how much medication the child should receive. Give the dose that matches the child's age on the chart. Ask the child's doctor if you don't know how much medication to give the child.

I'm trying to decide if I'm a hypocrite... I'm not a parent, but I think I would be concerned about giving drugs to my kids to get them to sleep.
On the other hand, I dose my dog up with it pretty regularly (she hates fireworks and other load noises, benadryl calms her down on holidays).

Re: Wow, 20% of parents admit to drugging their kids
I had to 'rough it out' as a kid, if you can call it that. Other than the normal round of childhood vaccinations, my parents really discouraged the use of medication. I remember breaking the crest of my hip when I was a freshman in high school. The doctor's prescription for pain killers promptly went into the trash can.
