Choke Threading the Serbu Super Shorty

Post by Stout »

Does anyone know if there is enough room to thread the 7.5" Remington 870 barrel for choke tubes. I've heard yes and no.

Quickly looking at my SSS I would say Yes.

Yes, I have done two of them using the tru-choke thin wall chokes.

The barrel is very thick where the threads will be and I'm not sure what thin wall chokes would offer. I did hear back from a shop in CA that they would thread the barrel. It may be dependent upon the location of the forcing cone.

I'm planning on adding a Salvo-12 to my collection and the Super Shorty would be a great platform. I think. I do wonder if the patterns would close in with chokes added.

I used the thin wall because of how short the barrel is just thinking the pressure was higher that close to the chamber so I wanted to leave as much material as possible. Not saying this matters but I already had the tooling for the thin wall and it made me feel better about it.

The barrel is quite thick when that close to the chamber.

Therefore, regular chokes could be used.

Remchokes and Winchokes (same as Invector, Accu-choke) are all just over 2" in length. So yes, they could easily go into a 6" barrel with 3" of chamber.

Is there anyone that offers this service? I was told by one shop that the mag tube ring welds create hard spots in the bore, that will damage the threading taps.

It may damage threading taps but thats why it should be done single point. We are VERY backed up now or we could get you taken care of.

How backed up? I'm not in any hurry, and I'd rather it be done by someone who's BTDT. :)

Backed up enough that we aren't even taking in the non silencer work.....even as a schedule filler!

Hope this helps-

I had roseactionsports.com thread my Serbu Super Shorty 870 a couple of years
ago. He did a fantastic job and the turnaround was great. He did the standard
RemChoke, the stand off looks great on there. I also had him do a tritium front
sight as I think it just looked better with a bead.

Oh and he does want a copy of your form 4 to do the work, just FYI.

Thanks-
Shea

Rose action wont do them anymore. I ended up sending it off to Americhoke. $135. Should have it back in a week or so.

I'm looking into buying a SSS, how are they compared to a SBS? I shot one a long time ago but cant remember much about it. I was looking at a 10" Remington 1100 or the SSS.

I know about the AOW vs SBS stamp difference but want a truck toy. I have seen how useful a shotgun is Vehicle to vehicle and have been through the Offensive Driving course at Ft Bragg and been through the Vehicle ballistics course when I was an SRT officer.

I had a Benelli (Pump first round, then semi) in our vehicles in my previous profession. I have met Mark and his daughter before but never asked about it. do you guys find yourself shooting them alot or do they gather dust in the safe? I have enough Safe Furniture and want something I want to actively go out to shoot.

Sorry to jack your thread here but figured you had an answer and I had a good audience here (SSS owners)

My SSS has the Hogue tamer grip. It's not bad at all, relatively speaking. The trick is to push forward on the front grip, and pull back with the rear grip. That tends to make the recoil the most manageable. I fire 3" and slugs on occasion.

As for threading, my barrel is on it's way back. The mag lug area had to be annealed, but supposedly no problem after that. I'll need to refinish it, but oh well. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Doesn't look too bad. Price came out higher than expected; $40 extra for the annealing.

That said, it's done....and it doesn't look too bad. Probably won't bother refinishing it anytime soon.

More photos....

Flush fit choke tube, that's clearly not flush (mostly cosmetic...but still):

Does not appear to be perfectly centered either (not sure how vital this is..tube is tight towards the bottom, a bit looser towards the top):
