Good host for a semi auto SBS?????

Post by BCJ »

I need to round out my collection so I'm looking to do a semi auto SBS with fully stock and approx. 12" barrel; I'm looking for host suggestions.

I was thinking about the Stoeger M2000 since it inertia and in theory should be just fine shortening the barrel but I can't find anyone who as actually tried it.

I've also been considering some of the older recoil operated guns like the A5, 11-48 and stevens 720. They should work with the reduced barrel weight as long as they don't beat themselves to death from reducing it too much.

I was trying to stay away from the gas guns since opening the gas port will likely mean it has to be tuned to a particular type of ammo.

Any suggestions? I already have a Saiga S12 12" so I'm looking for something more conventional. Already have a few SBS pumps and SXS so this one is limited to being semi.

Thanks

I know you said no gas guns, but just for info, when I was a cop I had a rem 1100 20 ga lightweight with a 10 in barrel and it worked fine.

I was originally trying to stay away from gas guns but I think I'll just buy a Mossberg 930 and give it a try as a 14" gun. I'll have to wait for my suppressor form 1 to come back before I spend any more money on toys

Just as an update the form 1 came back so I now have a 14" Mossberg 930 cut for chokes. It runs federal birdshot perfectly

I was going to say... do a 930. They're easier to get to run with light ammo anyway, and replacement barrels are cheap, and resale is instant.

Cut it a few inches, test, repeat.

For an SBS I'd go mag fed. Saigas can be tuned to run well and you arent limited to 4 rounds.

Saigas can be made to run short without any problems.
They look cool and or mean if that is what you want, most of us do.

There is a gas regulator that works perfectly in the standard Saiga 12 ga that I bought and tested just like the video states.
I randomly loaded up a mag with low brass #8 bird shot, high brass 00 Sellor and Bellot, and slugs and it functioned perfectly.

Dial it in and forget.

Of course old school is ALWAYS cooler like a browning A5.

The Tang thumb safety is also great. No fumbling to find it or worry about pressing the trigger rather than the safety plunger under stress. Plus, it's already at your sightline for visual reference.
A great all around piece.

I'd still prefer to stick w the Saiga12. Mag fed, and similar to my AKs. Easy/familiar manual of arms. Quick reloads instead of fumbling w brass under stress. And a great host that has been used w Salvo in competitions.

I'll be replacing the plastic safety with an enhanced metal one from Brownells.

Not sure yet if I want to run a rail with a dot or just KISS.

I do love the reliability of this gun. After a short break in period it will now cycle the cheapest #8 birdshot.

I did have to take the gun apart and chamfer the front edge of the lifter, it would scrape thumb nail pretty hard. I did a light trigger job at the same time and it's around 5 pounds with a tiny hint of creep. Not bad for a shotgun.

Saiga is very cool but I have heard they are finicky.

You can always manually cycle if Fail-to-Eject.

My dream. It WILL be MINE!!! (when at good price)

remington sells a 14" and and 18" version of the versamax in their defense catalog that uses the same action as the regular versamax. they cycle 2.75" target loads to 3.5" magnum loads.
