Since the regs say the only thing that MUST be on the receiver is the serial number, and since my registered SBR lower is a very nice Colt, I have engraved all of my info on my barrels. I did it by printing all of the required info on a Brother P-touch label maker and attaching the label to the exposed part of the barrel. I added a wrap of clear tape to make sure it didn't shift. I then engraved through the label following the letters with the top of a Dremel electric vibro-engraver. Here is the barrel in a vice part of the way through the process:
The end result in context:
My other SBR upper was a 10" with a pistol length gas system so there was a lot more room in front of the gas block for the engraving to show beyond the hand guard. This one is carbine length, but since I was building it as a range toy and with an adjustable gas block I don't really worry about the length of exposed gas tube.

I'm sorry for your loss JK
Does the gas block cover it?
Does the gas block cover it?
Re: Adventures in home engraving
It does not have to be that big.
Re: Adventures in home engraving
Is the engraving .003" deep, as I understand ATFE regs require?
