8" 'Flash Hider/Dummy Suppressor' to avoid a SBR

Post by MMH »

Can I build a carbine with an 8" barrel and a permanently attached 8 " flash hider to avoid it being an SBR? The 'flash hider' would be more of a skeletonized 'dummy suppressor' - a 2" OD tube with multiple slots cut in it. The suppressor would mount on the barrel and have the same length as the 'flash hider/dummy suppressor', thus the overall 'barrel' length of the carbine would be 16" w/ or w/o the suppressor. I know that the ATF pushed back on taking this approach w/ their muzzle brake on their MPX.

I do not have Sig's money & do not want to be a test case.

You're good as long as it does not reduce the sound.

I think it was the baffles of the MPX that got it in trouble. I have a Ruger 10/22 with TacSol SB-X barrel on it so I think your concept is good.

Have you considered an integral suppressor like Liberty Leonidas or Daniel Defense?

If you ever have a suppressor mount freeze up under a cage you could be in a bad situation. 22LR like mine barely gets hot. Also consider how it will mount to barrel, many mounts have levers at base, direct thread on short barrels don't always stay tight.
It's not a silencer, it's a can of whoopass!

Agreed, a permanently attached tube with vents/slots is GTG. Been there, done that.
