I have a interesting question for everyone here. if you have a AR pattern rifle that is a SBR and you decide to put a 16 inch + upper on it. Can you take it across state line without filing with the ATF for notification that your moving your SBR temporary?

This will be interesting, I suppose technically the SBR is the registered receiver. I'm interested in the results of this.

If a rifle is not in a short barrel configuration, you can take it anywhere it's legally allowed without a permission slip.

Yes you can, No personally I don't. I file .20s and take them as SBRs

I have to say thanks for the information. Been going around asking question about this topic and got some ok information. I'm working on that 12.5 inch 308 and looking at getting a 20 inch upper for it. so I can possibly do some hunting with friends in Texas and a few other states.

The rifle is an SBR; if you can change it into a "regular" rifle temporarily, it is not in SBR configuration and would not require a .20.

The other option would be to get another lower setup as a pistol, then you could take the short upper

Depends on what you are really wanting.

For me, specifically for hunting, I try and keep dedicated weapons for hunting purposes.
