Benefits of a rifle caliber SBR

Post by Libertarian_Geek »

This came up in discussion over the weekend:

What are the benefits of having a rifle caliber SBR AR in various calibers 5.56, 5.7x28, 6.8, 7.62, etc.

Choose your top 3 reasons.

Depending on who you are the answer will vary. Individuals who are LEO, Operator's working overseas, and basic shooters will all have different reasons for shorter barrels. Typically it's a 'want' over a need when it comes to the usual shooting crowd. I am SBR'ing my AR-15. My reasoning, I wanted a smaller barrel to create a smalle package, better balance with a suppressor, and I like the look.

This. Also: Eliminating the excess, plain barrel length hanging out there.

Vehicle/Stand ingress/egress plus this as my third which is really just a subset of V/S i/e.

If you're going to shoot suppressed then a rifle caliber SBR is a perfect fit. You don't need more than about 9 inches of barrel to accurately put a subsonic rifle bullet downrange. Anything more is a waste for subsonic velocity. A 9 inch 300 Blackout AR is a very sweet subsonic platform. It'll accurately put 220 grain .308 bullets downrange a put a smile on your face and amaze the guys at the range.

They're more pointable and my 16" AR is too damn long in some indoor matches. Also, storage. I don't hunt or egress vehicular stadurdizal procedurals.

Because I live in the United States of America, work, pay my bills and taxes and I want one. Nothing more needs to be said. If the liberals want to take it away they can pry it from my "cold dead hands"

Only if you have a folding stock. Otherwise it looks as dumb as a midget wearing stilts.

Hahaha, I like that analogy. The relative necessity of the buffer tube has always been something I found to be irritating about the AR platform for an SBR.

Other than looking cool... folding stocks are overrated. Yeah it makes admin transport a bit easier but I don't think there is a good reason to have a rifle loaded/available with the stock folded.

Having carried an M16A4 through multiple deployments, and as a proud owner of a Para-FAL, I would have to disagree with you Todd. There is quite a lot to be said for the portability/convenience afforded by a folding stock. Even an M4 so much easier to tote around with you than an A4. A Para-FAL is even nicer.

To carry around unloaded it is nice. If the rifle is carried loaded it is because I feel it may be needed. If it's needed I want the stock in the shooting position.

Outside of the military I don't carry a rifle around unloaded very much.

It's nice to have a magazine inserted when your rifle is slung behind you while your digging etc. Pulling a stock out is only one quick step. I understand what you are saying, but having the capability of enhanced portability is HUGE in my humble opinion.

FN seemed to think a folding stock was important when they developed the SCAR series....

Nope, it's what the customer required to justify a new platform not an updated AR.

Said customer being C.A.G. and others in the SOCOM community, Id say their requirements are no frills, and formed from absurd amounts of experience in the nastiest of situations. I know if I had the choice of a folding stock in combat, without sacrificing the reliability and accuracy of the AR, Id take it. However, Im not completely convinced that the SCAR or ACR does that yet. Id still take an M4 out of whats available now, even without a folding stock. However, There are AR's that have folding stocks, I just converted the Para to 300 BLK. I like folders, but they are not anywhere near the top of my battlerifle priority list.
