Guide killed by grizzlies, bear spray element to story

Post by johndoe3 »

All over the internet, there has been a contentious debate for years on whether bear spray vs large caliber handgun is most appropriate to use during bear attacks. The following story of a Elk Guide killed last week just south of the border of Yellowstone Park while field dressing an elk, by 2 grizzlies, involves use of bear spray. The Guide's client is also in a hospital for injuries.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced Monday that they are close to finalizing their investigation into the death of a local hunting elk guide and injury of his client that occurred last Friday. Killed near the border of Yellowstone National Park near Jackson Hole was Mark Uptain, 37, a father of five.

“The investigation revealed the two men approached the undisturbed elk carcass and there was no sign of bears in the immediate area of the carcass,” said Brad Hovinga, WGFD’s Jackson regional wildlife supervisor. “It was after they started field dressing the elk that the attack happened.”

...The experienced guide had fatal injuries consistent with a bear attack. Investigators recovered a discharged can of bear spray near his body.
Chalk one up to full use of a large bear spray container by the Guide instead of use of a handgun--result Guide dead and client injured.

Projectile to the knee of anyone nearby and then run like Usain Bolt still seems like the best plan.

There was a guy killed near the smokey mountain nat. park last week too. But by a black bear obviously.

There was a small child killed, and mother and sibling both mauled badly a few years back at the smokeys too. I think the little girl was 6.

I seriously don't know why people always wants to spread myth that black bears are scared of you and will run away.

Maybe they will run off, maybe they'll charge you and won't run away, but in most states where they're protected by the state, local and federal government, they have no reason to have a natural fear of humans. They're certainly not going to be afraid of you. They have no reason to be.

Bears are like the feral hog population. Destructive and deadly. They should be treated as such.
I don't care what your chart says

Can't find the reference I came across a couple of years ago, but a study I saw then suggested that black bears are actually significantly more dangerous than grizzly bears both in terms of historical statistics and the ongoing threat to hikers/hunters/campers. Black bears don't really give much of a damn, where a grizzly will usually take off as they prefer avoiding encounters with humans. Unless of course a cub is involved; then a griz is extremely dangerous.
