Re: Fewer Americans own more guns
I think that gun owners (both legal and illegal) tend to not admit ownership in polls so the results are skewed.
I agree that people who own guns buy more but I disagree that it's rare for non owners to buy guns.“There's a tendency for people who already own guns to buy more,” Spitzer said. “It's rare for people who have never owned a gun to go out and buy one or several.”
Re: Fewer Americans own more guns
There have been a lot of first time gun buyers in the last 2 months. I suspect that January numbers will be high as well.

Total agreement; it is too common to see that first-time buyer asking advice and opinions of a disinterested clerk behind the counter -- or sometimes an over-bearing clerk with way, way too much opinion.
I know because it's difficult not to chime in with, "Don't worry about that ma'am... hold every one of them... buy the one that feels nicest... only try out the guns in 380, 9, 40, and 45... everything else is window-dressing."
Interference aside, I have seen the new-time buyer a number of times recently.

The gun club outside of my town is seeing a large spike in semi-auto ownership among traditional shooters. They're going to implement a new safety course for this reason.
