If there had to be just one IMO it would be the 1911 hands down. It the only gun that the world knows hey that's American badass. Read the first paragraph on TTAG on the ruger 1911 and he sums it up pretty well. And pump shotgun? Come on.

Even though pump shotguns outnumber 1911's by probably more than 200:1 ? The pump shotgun is the go to gun for most home defense , bird hunting and in many states for game hunting purposes. Your feelings about it aside, the pump shotgun is the quintessential American utility firearm. The AR-15 might get more press attention but for every AR there are hundreds of pump shotguns.

I doubt there's a house on my street that doesn't have at least one 12 gauge in the closet. Country folk got'em. City folk got'em. People in the burbs got'em. When Wal Mart is sold out of everything else they still have cases of 12 gauge shotgun shells and whole shelves dedicated to shotgun shells. Compare that to the 4 boxes of .45 ACP they have even when there isnt a buying frenzy going on or the zero boxes they have now.

As much as I hate to give Joe any credit for getting anything right at all the 12ga shotty FTW but not a crappy 2 shot break barrel like his gramma used. A proper pump with a magazine extension.
