Winning hearts and minds

A national Rasmussen poll published this last week shows:

68% of likely voters prefer living in a neighborhood where gun ownership is allowed.

22% prefer living in a neighborhood where nobody was allowed to own a gun.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

I've often said that I've never felt safer than when in a room full of 20-30 armed men.

Actually, a quote by Robert Heinlein.

Our battles are bloody drills."

And the remaining 10%... don't want to live in a neighborhood?

From a different news article, the other 10% were the undecided folks (e.g. not sure how they felt about guns in a neighborhood).

To paraphrase:
68% prefer not to have their stuff stolen or themselves/spouse/kids beaten/raped/murdered.
22% prefer to be victims of violent crime.
10% have seen 50 Shades of Grey and are interested in trying it out. They just don't realize that criminals don't respect their "safe word."

I wonder if the poll made any wording attempt to differentiate between legally acquired guns. Meaning, would individuals living in section 8 housing prefer that their neighbors be unarmed?

I see that the poll being cited is Rasmussen, which is good, because that polling center is one of a few that is interested in discovering ideological patterns as opposed to influencing them.

Side note: I did some real semi-pro polling stuff when I was getting my MBA many years ago, and the instructor thoroughly enjoyed destroying students' polls when they contained leading questions. I realize that this sort of flies-in-the-face of the stereotype of the 'liberal professor', but the business college at Texas State University does not lean left... repeat, does not lean left. That tickled and delighted me. Seems that a grasp of economics sort of turns one away from the Democrat party. It doesn't make one love the GOP, mind you, it just means that Democrat initiatives are often frustrating in the way that they casually ignore the economic realities of their implementation.

I've actually known several friends and family members who have stated that they would rather be raped or murdered than defend themselves from violent crime.

It's just something in the water of certain neighborhoods where people grow up.

Even my 2nd cousin who is a retired Police Chief of a mid-sized town won't carry now that he has retired. Says that it is just a nuisance. :(

However, I was trained that a pistol is a tool to use until you can fight your way to a rifle. 8)
