Today it was 14 years ago -- I still remember ---

Post by DKDravis »

This day 14 years ago, i was on the way to hand over my then 6 month old daughter to the day-care center quite a bit later than usual. I did not do that ... I went straight back home .. and turned on the television set ....

What I saw there at first just mystified me .. Was it some kind of sick joke ... No ...

I still feel a kind if weird twist in my stomach on this date ... So many completely innocent lives lost, because of something so utterly pointless as a religious belief that really should have become extinct in medieval times ...

My daughter was actually the one who reminded me of the significance of todays date ..

I remember walking out of work that afternoon to a sky clear of contrails. In flyover country, it is a common sight. A friend left a couple of hours after me and heard jet noise. Of course everything was grounded but in this case it was air force 1 with a fighter escort.

I was at Pohakuloa Training Center doing gunnery for our Bosnia rotation the following spring, I remember waking up to a loud crash at 3:03am like a door slamming and nobody else was up. Went to the chow hall for breakfast and heard a couple people talking about what sounded like a video game or movie, went outside and the Chaplain was talking to a group of guys; thats how I found out. Later on I saw the time lines and remembered checking my watch when I woke up that night, it was the same time the second plane hit at WTC.

I was moose hunting in Alaska. My two hunting partners and I had no clue that anything had happened. On 9-13, we rolled into my into my driveway and I went inside to get three beers from the fridge to drink while we unloaded our gear. No moose BTW. :( I happened to glance at the phone to see if there were any messages and the little flashy light was SOLID RED. Hmmmm, I thought well, maybe I should see who called so many times. The first one was my platoon leader, the second was the NCOIC of my shop, the third was the detachment CO...all wanting to know where the F--k I was! Well I was hunting God Damn it! So I called in and the 1SG answers the phone and I say "What's up Top, why the F--k is everyone so God Damn concerned about my where abouts. You all had the gird coordinates of my hunting camp in case we never showed back up to search for us. What gives?" He starts going on about how terrorists hijacked 4 jets, ran two into the world trade center buildings, one into the pentagon and the fourth slammed into a field in PA. I laughed at him! Cut the BS, what's up. He says go turn on my TV. Well by this time, my two hunting partners had come inside wanting to know where I was with the beers and I told them about the BS store my 'First Shirt' trying to weave. I told one of them to turn on the tube. Well...isn't that special  I asked how soon did I have to report in and was told I could finish my leave. That was convenient as my two hunting partners still had to rearrange for flights back to the lower 48, seeing as how their original flights had been cancelled. On a humorous side note, one of my hunting partners came up before the other and we did a little hunting before going back to the airport to pick up the other guy. As we go through the metal detector before entering the arrival area (at the Fairbanks International Airport  ) the alarm goes off when my buddy goes through. The sweet old lady operating the detector station waddles over with the hand held scanner and runs it over his body. It beeps over his coat pocket. He reaches in and pulls out a 375 H&H Magnum cartridge and holds it out in his hand. The sweet old lady reaches out, pats his hand gently before taking the cartridge and says..."That's OK honey, you can pick this up on your way out."

I was at work and someone came in and said that somebody had rammed an airplane into the World Trade Center. I said '"Bin Laden finally did it."
The guy had no idea who Osama Bin Laden was. I had been in New York City just a few days before for the first time and remembered how much those buildings were an eyesore.
