The CBS news list of the top 30 in rank counts SBRs, SBSs, and registered machine guns from the 2013 BATF report and supposedly doesn't count suppressors. It probably also includes those registered to the police. CO came out at #20.
1. Wyoming – 195.7 guns per 1,000 residents
2. District of Columbia – 66.4 guns per 1,000 residents
3. Arkansas – 41.6 guns per 1,000 residents
4. New Mexico – 40.5 guns per 1,000 residents
5. Virginia – 30.1 guns per 1,000 residents
6. Idaho – 24.2 guns per 1,000 residents
7. Alabama – 20 guns per 1,000 residents
8. Nevada – 19.5 guns per 1,000 residents
9. Alaska – 15.2 guns per 1,000 residents
10. Louisiana – 15.1 guns per 1,000 residents

You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

Considering DC's drakonian laws, I wonder about CBS's methodology.

They should have posted a general firearm ownership by state also.

You're right. Seems like counting LEO MGs is the only way to arrive at these #s.

CCW rate is a better ranking of an Armed Citizenry. Though some States have very open, carry laws. So they would need a special ? like a phone poll.

Where did they get the extra 38 people to make 1,000? Just extrappolate?
If they serveyed Houston residents making >35k$ then you'd get 20-30%. And CCW 5-8%.
But add in Austin and low income homes and they bring the average down.

And why would TX want MGs? We have more refined tastes. Aircraft, electronics, Foreign travel, watercraft. HOw many sailboats and yachts are there in WY?
(Just wild guesses above. Probably someone has real stats.)
Actually I like WY. They and ID are very much like 1970s TX. I have family living there and besides the cold, they love it there. UT is pretty cool, too. LDS rulz!
