12 Bump stocks used by Vegas shooter

It's always good to wait for the real evidence to come out. The BATF release noted that the Vegas shooter (Paddock) had installed "bump stocks" on 12 guns found in his Mandalay Bay hotel room--not illegally modified guns to full automatic.

It shows that much of the reporting to date on the shooting were merely wild and inaccurate speculation.
The man police say rained down bullets into a crowded country music festival on the Las Vegas strip Sunday modified a dozen guns with devices mimicking fully automatic fire, federal authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives traced all 47 firearms recovered from 64-year-old Stephen Paddock‘s hotel room and his two Nevada residences. San Francisco Special Agent in Charge Jill Snyder said Tuesday the agency found 12 bump stocks in the two-room suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino where Paddock spent four days stockpiling 23 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition in preparation for Sunday’s attack.

Snyder said the bump stocks “simulate automatic fire,” though she didn’t identify which firearms from Paddock’s arsenal of rifles, shotguns and handguns were used in the shooting.
Washington state Guv Inslee (Dem) is asking the WA legislature to ban bump stocks. ...Expect other gun control states to jump on that bandwagon.

As numerous YouTube videos have demonstrated, assembling a bump board from a board and a pipe is absurdly simple and effective for simulating full auto fire. Hundreds of round per minute can be fired using stuff you have in your garage and at most half an hour of work, two minutes if you're at all skilled with tools. Banning bumpfire stocks is just a silly notion. I mean bumpfire stocks themselves are rather silly, as really, who needs such high rates of fire outside a war zone? But banning these toys accomplishes nothing.

Feinstein introduced a bill today actually.

Essentially banning anything that may increase a semiauto rate of fire.

BILL

To prohibit the possession or transfer of certain firearm

accessories, and for other purposes.

1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa2

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

3 SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

4 This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Automatic Gunfire

5 Prevention Act’’.

6 SEC. 2. PROHIBITION ON POSSESSION OF CERTAIN FIRE7

ARM ACCESSORIES.

8 Chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, is amend9

ed—

3 ‘‘(v)(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), on and

4 after the date that is 180 days after the date of enactment

5 of this subsection, it shall be unlawful for any person to

6 import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess, in or af7

fecting interstate or foreign commerce, a trigger crank,

8 a bump-fire device, or any part, combination of parts,

9 component, device, attachment, or accessory that is de10

signed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semi11

Feinstein. Like I said - silly. She was awful in the 1980's and she's still awful, no surprise there.

The bottom line is that murder is against the law. It doesn't matter what you ban, regulate, try to control, or what types of counter measures you impose. Criminals, and anyone looking to do harm to another, simply do not obey the law.

But these politicians aren't trying to stop murders. Political salesmanship around protection of voters has always been about optics, not results.

Only results at the voting booth that keep their pockets lined.

So what would be more effective in the Mandalay Bay shooting scenario? Aimed fire in semi-auto or spray and pray using bump fire? While he was aiming at a large group of people over 1000 feet away, it's possible that many of his shots went wide of the target.

Did use of his slide fire stocks actually cause more deaths?

SilencerTalk was a place I could disccuss making registered silencers without being told I was a criminal. That is no longer true. http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=99273

Seems like that would depend on the skill level of the shooter.

From his height above the crowd it seems the trajectory should have been flattened some making aimed shots easier for someone of moderate skill. Without skill it would seem clear spray and pray would be his best chance.

The use of slide fire may have caused more deaths if he was a s--t shot but repeat the event five times under those conditions and it seems logical the results would vary significatnly. But a skilled marksman taking aim with a semi-auto would likely average consistently better over multiple events.

Boom and bust on bumpfire stock market (ambiguous pun is ambiguous):

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017 ... es-demand/

Manufacturers are claiming they are sold out and resellers are pullimg the listings, even auction sites. Gunbroker will not allow listing of the currently lawful firearm accessory at present.

Now, regardless of what we think of these things, does anyone else get a really uncomfortable sense of being ontop of a slippery slope here? Even the NRA is on record as being against these at this point.

We seem to be forgetting that bumpfire is a very old technique that does not require any additional hardware. Given the density of the crowd, the shooter could have murdered and maimed just as many Americans without bumpfire stocks. Aimed fire was not required for this massacre.
