We at DICK’S Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones.
But thoughts and prayers are not enough.
We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organizing and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country.
We have heard you. The nation has heard you.
We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens. But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America – our kids.
Following all of the rules and laws, we sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been.
Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens.
We believe it’s time to do something about it.
Beginning today, DICK’S Sporting Goods is committed to the following:
We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK’S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.
We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.
We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.
We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.
At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations:
Ban assault-style firearms
Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21
Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks
Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law
Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms
Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks
We hope others join us in this effort to let our kids know that their pleas are being taken seriously.
Some will say these steps can’t guarantee tragedies like Parkland will never happen again. They may be correct – but if common sense reform is enacted and even one life is saved, it will have been worth it.
We deeply believe that this country’s most precious gift is our children. They are our future. We must keep them safe.
Sincerely,
Edward W. Stack

Dick's is a place I will now avoid completely.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

Me too!! Not that I was a patron much anyway.johndoe3 wrote:Dick's is a place I will now avoid completely.
Dick's should be ashamed for this type of sleazy marketing to get their name in the news. There is one in a town within driving distance that I was in a couple years ago. They were advertising cheap dove shotgun shells and the only reason I even went there. They had maybe 15-20 guns of all types and no ARs that I remember. They sold mostly canoes, clothes, jogging suits and like items. Maybe a few gun safes that had the handles stolen. The sales staff in the firearms section knew next to nothing about firearms.
In my state there is no gunshow loophole. The gun show people are licensed dealers that do instant background checks on their computer. I don't know where they came up with this. Just shows how little they know about firearms.

Again?
Again?
I don't care what your chart says
Re: Dick's bans 'assault rifles'
Yep, again. But this time they're calling for an all out war on gun rights, I don't remember that last time.
A NICS check is a federal think, not a state thing, dealer's can't avoid running NICS just by selling from a different location.
The 'gun show loophole' is referring to private sale of firearms between two non-licensed individuals at a gun show.

Re: Dick's bans 'assault rifles'
Some states do go through their state police for NICS checks.
Naturally the state police call the same NICS and get the same approval/delay/denial, but some states don't call directly to NICS.

With as much stuff that is faked lately, I'm half afraid to share this, but if it's legit, you need to see it.

Might as well change the signs to "Dickless"
Re: Dick's bans 'assault rifles'
The reference to gun shows must be the few scabs selling their used personal guns out of their trunk in the parking lot. I usually see one or two of these. Never stopped to ask. There was an article in a local paper that was claimimg only 40% of sellers at gun shows were licensed dealers. Fake news. The 60% were selling coins, knives, and gun care products that do not need a license.doubloon wrote:Yep, again. Re: Dick's bans 'assault rifles'
I believe many who use the phrase gun show loophole are aware the sales without a NICS check are between private sellers and use the phrase to incent people to get behind a movement to criminalize the private sale of guns and require all gun sales to go through a licensed dealer and therefore a NICS check.hardcase wrote:...
