Norwegians ban semi-auto hunting rifles

Post by johndoe3 »

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2018 ... crap-sell/

The new Norwegian law gives gunowners 3 years to sell their guns outside of Norway, or scrap their semi-auto rifles.

Sorry to see Norway go down in flames on gun rights in order to satisfy the progressives' penchant for more control.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

And this is why I believe that our founding fathers got it right in this regard.

I wonder what the Vikings would think about getting rid of their arms.

Yep -- it happened years ago in England .. Back in the late 80'ies following "The Hungerford Massacre" .. I'll let you do your own Google-fu ..
They only banned Centrefire Semi-auto rifles -- In 1997 they banned ALL civilian handgun ownership - only repeater rifles and shotguns are now legal for civilians in the UK

Also in Australia, following another "massacre" where some loonie used semi-auto rifles to shoot a lot of locals and tourists in Port Arthur, Tasmania. I think New Zealand just followed the Aussies like sheeple on that one ..

Contrary to the effect it had in Australia, where gun violence has been steadily reduced since the changes, this did not happen in the UK, gun violence has increased at a faster rate then before the handgun ban. My personel interpretation of this fact is that the guns used in gun violence in a society already heavily restricted in civilian gun ownership, is done with guns that have always been illegal. very very few cases of gun violence were with legally owned guns (even previously legal weapons)
The same is the case in the Scandinavian countries .. The reason Norway is banning Semi-autos probably has something to do with the "Utoya-massacre" where the right wing extremist terrorist used a legally owned Ruger Mini-14 as one of his weapons, though he killed most of his victims with a Glock handgun.
In Denmark, Semi-autos are not banned outright- Denmark tends to follow Germany on many of its decisions on weapons, but the police no longer issues new permits for a lot of the "black rifles" like AR-15 clones and the like -- Weapons permits are at the discretion of the local police chief. There is no "Shall issue" only a "May issue" That goes for ALL weapons permits, hunting or sporting.. Handguns are only allowed for sporting purposes, and are strictly controlled, issued only by the Shooting sports associations, after police approval, and only from a kind of "Positive List" --
None of the restrictions of gun ownership introduced in Denmark over the last 50 years have shown any link with reduction in gun-violence .. probably the same mechanism as with the UK .. The black market for guns is flooded with "imported" weapons from the eastern european countries now in the EU.. Street prices for handguns are usually lower than what a legally owned gun would cost you .. Meaning the bad guys that WANT guns, have them .. The restrictions on legally owned guns have 0 effect on gun crime.

If you look at some facts about the Australian ban, you'll see it was pointless.
Only an estimated 20% of firearms were turned in.
W/in the following 3yrs, the homicide rate went up 20%.
The current homicide rate (per 100k) is the same as it was before the ban.
What did this accomplish???

I didn't read it yesterday so forgive me if I can't remember the exact http. However, I get my data from gov't sites, like "ucr.fbi.gov" for US stats and so forth.

I looked. The Aussies saw an initial drop, then a rise, then a gradual trend downward in homicides. The problem is that all other crimes have been decreasing, as is seen in all other civilized countries. It appears that the gun ban did nothing of any real substance. As always, culture is the driver, not the laws.

Second link has a lot of additional sources: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-28/f ... ur/7254880

Third link references violent crimes, which has been an indication of the law's failure: https://www.louderwithcrowder.com/repor ... trol-fail/

Fourth link discusses how only 20% of the weapons were turned in, and now Australia has as many or more guns in private hands as before the ban, which then brings in that pesky crime drop...: https://www.theatlantic.com/internation ... ol/541710/

For the US positive data:
During the 1994 AW ban, the % of long guns (the category AWs fall under) used in firearm homicides stayed at roughly 4.5%. After the ban's sunset, the numbers began to fall. Today, they're closer to 2.5%.

That means a drop not only in percentage, but that the real number has decreased monumentally. I wonder when the MSM will address that conundrum?

Thank you for pointing out this crucial fact, also to DKDravis for similar indicators regarding this factor. For an extreme example, look to Japan, where while suicides are at an all time (recorded era) high, violent crime against others has remained negligable. Similarly in Switzerland, violent crimes against fellow citizens are almost shockingly low compared to many other countries around them.

In Japan gun ownership is extremely low, with major hurdles to be overcome to get a simple shotgun, and almost zero private citizens owning handguns. Even those who compete at the Olympic level with .22lr and air pistols have difficulty obtaining permits. So banning guns solved Japan's violence problem? Not in the least. The banning of weapons in Japan was primarily driven by US occupation after WWII, and included private sword ownership to a very large extent. But people weren't running around chopping up nor shooting their fellow citizens before the war - they left that to their army, who apparently did so with considerable glee in China and elsewhere... but I'm getting sidetracked. The primary reason Japanese people don't tend to murder each other much is because there is a prevailing culture of respect and discipline.

Look then at Switzerland, where rifle ownership is practically mandatory following military service. There have been a couple of shootings there in the last decade, but scarcely a blip on the media radar. Switzerland, again, while profoundly different from Japanese culture, is likewise a nation where respect and discipline are considered paramount.

Here's the latest homicide statistics reported by the world's nations, the last column indicating the year of last reporting. It's a bit of a mess as I've just sorted on Row B, the rate per 100,000 people in each country, using a spreadsheet, and can't be bothered trying to space it all out for easier viewing. But they're ordered from least to most killings to fairly easy to scroll through and get an idea of patterns. Easy enough to spot Japan and Switzerland near the top. USA is somewhat further down... and I doubt many US citizens would classify their own culture as being primarily or even secondarily driven by ideals around 'respect' and 'discipline.' Rather the focus seems to be on acquisition and entitlement, though this last is merely my opinion based on observation. Looking in more detail at Canada's recent trends our homicide rates gradually climbed, though the bulk of such violence tends to be concentrated among gang members competing for drug trade turf.

We could all improve. During my lifetime I've seen the sense of community in my city eroded in some ways, while in other significant ways it has improved. The conversion of housing into an investment commodity seems to be a primary negative force militating against community, depriving especially our youngest of much in the way of hope for their futures as they are priced out of the cities. But the overall trend here is downward for violent crimes and property crimes, so we're doing something right, and it is encouraging to see the recent rise in popularity of one of our university professors who speaks of taking responsibility. People thrive when they feel a sense of connection to their community, and a role within that group where they can earn the respect of their fellows. It's not something easily taught, but it seems critical, especially in the dozens of countries at the bottom of this list, that people persist in moving towards such ideals. And banning guns willy-nilly really doesn't have a darn thing to do with it. (Though in reference to a protestor against the aforementioned professor, perhaps we ought to consider banning garrottes?)
