Wow, I've never flown with a firearm and always imagined that it would be a nightmare but I bet after doing it once it'd be easy as pie. This is certainly food for thought.

I and family/friends have flown many times with firearms packed in luggage, declared, etc. Never any hassle or problem. Been doing it since I was 18.

However, I have known a few that have lost their guns out of the locked luggage or the entire suitcase lost. Insurance covers it and the guns are entered in NCIC. I know some have eventually been recovered. Dont check anything youre not willing to lose though.
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand upon. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them.

Since the number of times I check luggage is close to zero, and the reason why I don't do it is because I would have to wait to pick it up when I arrive, I don't see how checking a gun cannot be more hassle than doing my current carry-on strategy.

While it's not conducive to carry a gun because of my work (the company handbook specifically states no "unlicensed firearms" but does not elaborate on what constitutes company policy on licensing) and I'm often in places where they are heavily regulated. If I could I would always travel with one, and not just because of the removal of my bag from the inspection process.

As far as the "I don't want to wait for my bag" thing, it's understandable. Considering I have to wait on the rest of my coworkers, it's a moot point, but I definitely get the desire to travel with nothing but a carry-on. However, given the opportunity to travel with a firearm, I think the time spent at the baggage claim is a small price to pay for my personal protection.
