Endangers troops or protects their right to privacy? It seems that if military personnel were required to make known every firearm owned off base that people would be screaming about abusing their privacy. That is not to say that it isn't a serious issue and that every effort possible must be made to reach out to our returning service personnel.

When I was a Bragg in either 2000 or 2001 they (command) sure as hell tried. It was as a result of some joes getting drunk and having a pistol in the barracks and getting caught. The Brigade CDR ordered all the commanders to provide a list by name (to include those living off post) of each weapon, make/model and serial, number. Fortunatley after about a week it got shut down and the CDR was told he could not ask that. For a military commander to use suicide as a reason they need to know who has what is crap.
