Did his 15 year old son sneak out of the house at 1am?
Was he just playing a prank trying to scare his aunt? If so, why lunge at his armed father?

Re: Father shoots son by mistake - thinking burgler.
Going by what I read in the NY daily news the step-son was holding a knife up.
So I'd say the kid asked for it.
If you look you will see that some kids are killing their parents and grandparents. ( I question the parenting skills of the deceased.)
"He confronted the suspected burglar, clad in black and wearing a mask, and opened fire when he lunged at him with a knife, authorities said."Tyler Giuliano, wearing a black mask and clutching a knife, was apparently breaking into his aunt’s home next door when he was gunned down by his dad early Thursday.

We don't know he was innocent. All we know is he was breaking into a house with a knife.WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR US TO PUT SERIOUS GUN CONTROL LAWS ON THE BOOKS?? HOW MANY MORE INNOCENT DEATHS WILL IT TAKE????

The kid was recently adopted - he met his new father at school.

They're pretty popular in Europe, a pocket knife in Italy you're not allowed to carry a pocket knife unless you have a "legitimate reason".
