Looking for a bolt gun

Post by jppd47 »

Thinking of getting a Remington 700 in 7MM mag. I want a good bolt gun in my collection. One that will be good for hunting, mostly the white tail here in new england. May be something bigger. Putting a can on it would be nice. Also i'm left handed, and while shooting a right handed bolt is do-able, its easier when its on the left. Price range of around $800 for the rifle.
Just looking for suggestions. Thanks

Here is a link to nice looking Remington in 260 Remington.

http://www.snipershide.net/forum/ubbthr ... Post600015

The 260 remington is a 308 brass necked at .264 (6.5 mm). It's a superb round for deer. With 130 or 140 grain bullets you would get 2900-3000 fps and be very flat shooting. Since the person put it up for sale on 5/19 and hasn't sold it, a good offer below the $730 asking price would likely be taken. The seller is in NY (Long Island). I was looking seriously at this rifle myself. :-)

I picked up a Remington SPS Tactical .223 for $580 (new in box) out the door. The .308, was the same price.

I know that the .308 is nowhere near the 7mm, but they are still good rifles for good prices.

They have 20" heavy barrels.

Remington use to make a nice centerfire pump action hunting rifle, I forget the model number, I think it might be 7600 or 7615.
They along with Ruger make nice single shot hunters that are good for southpaws.

I'm thinking the .260 remington would be a great round. I've herd great things about the 6.5mm. Only problem would be finding one for a lefty. A web search brought on up in New Zealand... :( must keep looking

You're right, it may be difficult to find a Remington 700 LH in 260 Remington.
Here's a link to a new Remington 700 CDL LH in 7mm magnum, $725 buy price.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =103872415

edited to add: Personally, my opinion is that 7mm magnum is more gun than needed (higher recoil, fewer suppressor choices, etc.) for deer and general fun shooting. The 260 Remington is more appropriate for your stated uses; although it may be difficult to find in LH. Maybe .308 is a possibility, since there are LH bolt guns more widely available in it?

Yeah. I was thinking the same. i got a .308 all ready (semi-auto though). Good thing is I'm not looking to buy it right now. So my options are open. Thanks for the input

That is a very loaded statement and highly untrue. Savage makes some excellent rifles and are extremely accurate right out of the box.

They make some great left hand models as well.

I think that 7mm is way more than you need for whitetail. I'd look at something in .270 win which can be had in lefty models from Savage. Here is a stainless model. http://www.savagearms.com/116flss.htm

Just for kicks, I looked at the 2008 Remington catalog for LH bolt guns (since I also am LH). The 270 Winchester is available in 2 models.

Rem 700 CDL model# 27105(L)

Rem 700 XCR model# 84502(L)

Remington makes few rifles anymore in 260 Remington, except two. One is only in RH, a Model 7 CDL model# 26419. Also a limited edition in RH only, Rem 700 CDL SF, model#84108.

So...if you were amenable to 270 Win (halfway between 260 Rem and 7mm mag in powder capacity), then there are two Remington's available new in LH bolt action. 270 Win uses .277 (6.8mm) bullets, and there is a huge selection available in both hunting bullets and high BC target bullets.

I noticed the .270 been thinking it will be easier. Looking around and found the Sako 75 was made for lefties and in a bunch of calibers. Only problem is they don't make it anymore and doesn't look like anyone is selling it. A bit pricey though.

If 270 Win is OK, then you could order the Rem 700 CDL model#27105(L), and many people sell them for about $700-725 which is in your price range. The 2008 Remington catalog shows it comes with 24" barrel, 1 in 10 twist, and capacity 4 in the magazine.

Of course if you really wanted a 260 Remington in Remington 700 and found a used .243, 7mm-08, or 308 in LH at a good price, you could have it rebarreled in 260 Remington. They all use the 308 brass, so all that needs to changed is the barrel.

A .243 Win is another nice caliber for your needs.

CDNN has some nice Steyr rifles that are below wholesale price and in your budget.

I have an older Savage LH model 111 in .243. I have found it to be a nice shooting rifle. Using 70 grn Nosler BT's, I have harvested woodchucks at approx 350 yards (about as far as I can get here outside of the Poconos).

That said, my absolute favorite rifle is my Ruger No. 1 in .223. I want another for a deer caliber. If you are open to single shots, and something a little different, I like them a lot.

The 700 is a nice gun but the factory trigger is very heavy.

This is true, but any competent gunsmith can adjust the Remington trigger to a safe and acceptable trigger pull weight. I have several Remington 700 rifles that I have adjusted the trigger to 2.5 to 3 lbs.

I would consider the Model 700 VSF Left-Hand in .308 Win an excellent choice. The barrel is easily threaded and there are a number of very good suppressors available in .308 Win. (7.62 NATO)

Why mess with the trigger? Just drop in a Jewell.

Ben B. asked:

I suggested adjusting the trigger because of cost considerations stated in the original post.

The Remington Model 700 VSF Left-Hand in .308 Win can be found for about $800 and there's nothing wrong with the Remington trigger. It just needs adjusting.

My $0.02

By the way Ben B, I love the smiley face on your Avatar. 8) Nice touch.
