5 inch barrel for 10/22 SBR

I have a hankering for a 10/22 SBR with a 5 inch or so barrel with a folding Butler Creek stock. Anybody have any recommendations as far as barrel options go? I assume 5 inches will keep bulk pack subsonic. Will charger barrels work? Any thoughts?

I did a 6" version but I used a GM blank for my build and a billet receiver I machined in the shop. I threaded the receiver and barrel to avoid the whole v-block think. The stock is a cut down butler creek stock. THe barrel is threaded for a can. All in all a pretty cool build. I will do another with integral suppression though. If you do not have the tools available to you get a 10/22 barrel fro mgreen mountain, find a good machine shop and have them turn the barrel for you. THey can thread it for you at the same time.

Sounds like a cool build! I'd like to see some pics of it.

I will be leaving afghaniland in a couple weeks. I will post some when I get home. I may have some build pics on my computer, will have to look. Yes it was fun to build and I make all of my 10/22 guns from billet now that I have figures it out. I will dig through my files and see what I can find.

Easiest thing to do is just cut down a stock barrel.
I made an integral with a ported barrel....Will be posting a thread in the silencersmithing section on it soon.

unless it's ported , 4.5 inch is the sweet spot for bulk pack to stay subsonic .. I've used 4" and 5" barrels before and the 5" gets a crack once in a while to often depending on temp, altitude and humidity ... 4" is always subsonic ... i'd imagine 6" would always be super unless you use specific ammunition , standard velocity and such...

just my 2c.

I like the idea of this.

But it is too long based on everything your guys are saying.

This one has a 5.5" TacSol Charger threaded barrel that, unfortunately is no longer available...

The stock was changed to extend out to thread protector on the barrel

I used a 5 1/4" barrel from Zimmerman arms. .920 fluted and threaded. He sells them on eBay pretty regular.

how well does the 10/22 cycle when supressed, i have one that won't cycle as is with subsonics, just wondering if supressors cause any issues?

To help cycling, get the Kidd recoil springs. They have a "softer" spring that helps greatly with cycling subsonic ammo.

Thanks for the help guys. The plan to date is a Kidd barrel cut to 4.5 inches, Volquartersen trigger pack, and AGP side folder all duracoated black. I'll probably top it with a Fastfire III to make a nice, light little package.

If anything, suppression should help cycling due to increased back pressure. How many rounds have you put through it? What kind of recoil spring is in it? Is it clean? My integral had some issues with all subs when it was new, I put a brick of HV's through it and it haven't had issues since, depending on ammo. FWIW, Fiochi and Aguila subs have never cycled core than about 60-70% in this gun, and Winchester subs probably 10%.

I built one originally with a factory barrel cut down to 4". It sounded good with a can and cycled fine. Pretty much any ammo besides CCI Stingers was subsonic through it.

But it would not cycle reliably with the can removed.

I later got a 5.5" Lilja barrel. It would run without the can, but most bulk ammo was supersonic in the gun. I end up just shooting subs or standard velocity ammo through it. Other guns do well with a 4" or 4.5" barrel keeping bulk ammo subsonic.

I use the 4 3/4" on mine. The only ammo to go super was the rem subs. CCI standards are the ticket though. If wou want to hear something stupid, try a colibri. They won't cycle the action though.

A little ramp work on the rear of the bolt helps the cycle problems with the weaker ammo

Looks good, I bought the barrel today so you should be seeing that soon. Anybody have any recommendations for optics on pocket rifles? I plan to actually use this little carbine quite a bit for hiking and those sketchy float plane rides I have been taking lately. I cant think of a better purpose built, lightweight survival tool. I expect decent accuracy because of the quality of barrel and components, but I don't want to detract from its usefulness with a bulky optic. Any thoughts?

Many optic choices for something compact.
I dont know what kind of accuracy your looking for but I put a 2 moa red dot on one of my pistols and i can hit a soda can consistantly at 125 yards when using my quad or a bench for a rest.
A short rifle would even be easier to hit a can size target that far.

I put the Kidd spring in mine and bought a radiused bolt from CPC. Not a single malfunction with CCI Standard Velocity or Aguila Subsonic
