Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
If it doesn't splatter, shatter, burst or explode, it's not worth shooting.
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Very nice! How "quiet" is it?
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Hey. What's the thread pattern for the silencer? And is there some kind of standard? I have been wanting to do something like that withe the Beowulf. Thanks.

Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Since I started with a bull barrel, I cut to length, turned the barrel for my custom gas block I picked a thread dia. that would give me the largest shoulder for the suppressor to locate on.gunham wrote:Hey. 12" AA barrels are threaded 49/64" - 20 tpi The OD of the barrel is .775 and the thread OD is .7656 it only leaves less than a .010" shoulder.
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Name brand of bull barrel?
What kind of can is that? Looks like a titanium Octane 9 HD with vent holes.

Stoner 18" I cut off just behind the existing gas port
Suppresser, my partner and I designed and built
Holes you see are for rosett welding the baffles
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
How did you make the baffles? I can't tell if they were hydraulically pressed or CNC'd from a billet.
Either way nice job.
So the baffles welded together after you took that picture I take it? It's a non-serviceable sealed can?

They kind of look like they were spun with the concentric wrinking in the material.wacki wrote:How did you make the baffles? I can't tell if they were hydraulically pressed or CNC'd from a billet.

Would really like to see a video of this!

CNC milled from billet grade 5 17.01 per inch for bar stock
Tube grade 9
The finish is from a ball end mill.
I wish I could press but the baffle design would not be economical otherwise large companies like AAC would be doing it.
Yes its welded just as AAC welds their TI cans
It is a centerfire catridge and rarely needs cleaning if proper powders are used
I have seen several people using AA 5744 but this is a errosive powder that leaves powder granuals in the can and action
Most of my loads so far leave only a fine soot in the can
Still looking for reliable / accurate / subsonic formula
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
That is fantastic! Great job and thanks for sharing!

Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Just built a custom gas tube with flow adjustment
Now working on a cleaner load

The adjustable tube looks sweet, great design!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
Thanks!!
New load most people seem to think is too low of pressure
16gr trailboss / 500gr XTP / 2.240 / drilled flash hole to .160
920 avg fts
cycles and locks bolt back with clean barrel
lubed bullets
very slight crimp
lightly oiled barrel
2.5 oz buffer
standard carbine spring
gas adjustment wide open
Also I can adjust gas tube and shoot Hot loads!!

Looks like there is a big difference in recoil. Can is always a good way to go.
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
What was your blast chamber size and can diameter? I'm considering making a titanium one myself but since I don't have a machine shop (or many tools for that matter), I'm currently stuck with a D-cell maglite sized tube (1.5" diameter).
Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
That looks like it has a lot of recoil.

Re: 50 Beowulf subsonic project
That's a sweet setup. I have seen quite a few SBR Beowulfs and never understood why, but now that there's a can on the end, it all makes sense.
I'm going to build a can using a 1.5" diameter Ti tube from SDtac. Probably go with the 7.6" (8" overall) since I'll be mounting it to a 16" barrel.
Did you get a chance to check the drop in sound? From the video it seems quite a bit quieter. Hearing safe, would you say?
