Ruger .22WMR suppressed

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Ruger .22WMR suppressed

Post by photoman12001 »

I bought this 77/22-VMBZ (.22WMR) several weeks ago to use as a suppressor host. I already had a SWR Spectre II and SS Sparrow and I like .22WMR so why not? The barrel had issues at the muzzle so I asked about it in another thread here. Well I just got the barrel back from Jim Pixley and put the rifle back together this weekend. He cut 6" off the barrel and threaded it.

I like the rifle much more with those 6" gone. It balances much better and I think it looks better too. Of course mounting the suppressor adds weight back out there but it still looks cool. I hope it shoots as good as it looks and cutting the bad section off the muzzle remedied the accuracy issues.

Here you can see the section Mr. Pixley removed to make room for the suppressor.

Here you can see a .22WMR CCI Maxi Mag bullet I pulled from its brass.

Here is the bullet placed front-first into the new muzzle. It stops at the shoulder of the bullet as it should.

Here is the bullet placed front-first into the old muzzle. It just drops right into the barrel before engaging the bore about 1/2" into the barrel.

Here you can see the bad section of the bore at the old muzzle. It's dark and looks eroded or something.

I finally got a chance to shoot this rifle today with the suppressors. Unfortunately I only have access to an indoor range so I cannot really tell how much of a difference the suppressors really make. They do significantly reduce the noise signature but I don't know how much since I have to where hearing protection and there are other shooters present.

I could tell that the Spectre II was noticeably quieter than the SS Sparrow. That was strange to me because the Sparrow has been routinely quieter on rifles while the Spectre has been better on pistols. Even with slow bolt-action fire the suppressors got warm quickly.

I don't want to speak to accuracy at this point. I had PRK corrective eye surgery one month ago and my vision is not optimal to say the least. I have lots of ghosting/double vision in my dominant eye. I will say that given this handicap I was pleased with the groups.

I now have the exact same rifle inbound chambered in .22LR. It should be a very sweet pair :)

Love your pics....I should be a little more creative than slapping mine on the floor and snapping an iphone pic. Makes the gun porn much less enjoyable that way.
I've gotta stop this habit.

Thanks.

You've really got to love photographing them. It gets pretty time-consuming. Sometimes I think I like photographing them more than shooting them, sometimes the thought of photographing just exhausts me. In the end it's worth it though.

I enjoy my time spent logging my purchases, notes, pics, etc of my guns and silencers just as much as shooting them. Just satisfying to know that if I kick the bucket that my family can open the excel file and have a complete description of the item along with a hyperlink to pics and the price I paid for it.

But then blasting some piggies and nutria is nice too!!!!

It doesn't seem to be a generally known fact, but a 22 WMR can also fire the
22 WRF and the 22 Winchester Automatic round. They have the same case
diameter bur shorter cases.

The WRF will be supersonic but the 22 Win Auto round will probably be subsonic
in a shorter barrel. The 22 Win Auto round has been made in Mexico for a few runs
over the years, and I believe there was another run recently. Check Zanders and
sellers such as them. The cost is loony but it does offer a factory subsonic option if
you can find any.

You will, of course, have to clean the chamber well if you use either of the shorter
rounds. Nice pictures, by the way.
