Hello all
Picked up the Octane 2 HD this week after almost 8 months. Put on a G23 with Lone Wolf 9mm conversion bbl.
Only had white box 115 to test, its quite a bit louder than I hoped. Will subsonic 147 grain be noticeably "less noisy"?
I handload, anyone know of a particular powder that is "quieter"?
Eric

Yes. Much quieter. Load a mag with both and check it out.
You should not shoot 115 with out hearing protection.

If it doesn't splatter, shatter, burst or explode, it's not worth shooting.

147 plated bullets with about 3.0gr hp-38 or titegroup sounds great.

115-- 147... sub sonic doesn't matter,

Why would it not matter between 115 gr and 147 gr? 147 grain is quieter if its staying subsonic...continuity wrote:115-- 147... sub sonic doesn't matter,

I think what Tango is saying is as long as the round is sub-sonic 115gr-147gr doesn't matter. It's not the bullet profile, weight, etc.. it's all the speed. That being said I don't know of a 9mm that will cycle 115gr subs.Tango2249 wrote:Why would it not matter between 115 gr and 147 gr? 147 grain is quieter if its staying subsonic...continuity wrote:115-- 147... sub sonic doesn't matter,

I was in the same boat with my G19. Shot the 115 gr. and got that noisy sonic crack. I wasn't loud but still way more noisy than the .45 ACP with my Liberty Miranda. As soon as I got back to work from shooting the 9mm supersonics during my lunch break the UPS guy came and dropped off my 147 gr subs......damn the luck, I had just missed him. Gonna try all my new cans with subsonic ammo out this weekend if I have time.
You gotta find some 147 gr or 158 gr factory stuff if you want to shoot subsonic. Good luck finding some at a decent price. I haven't been very lucky since I got my Octane 9hd about a month or so ago. Got in the game right when ammo started to get impossible to find. I shouldn't have waited until my Form 4's cleared to start buying ammo......but I didn't know Sandy Hook was gonna happen and sure didn't know ammo was gonna disappear overnight after it did happen.
I've gotta stop this habit.

My bad, I wasn't clear.Tango2249 wrote:Why would it not matter between 115 gr and 147 gr? 147 grain is quieter if its staying subsonic...continuity wrote:115-- 147... sub sonic doesn't matter,
In general, factory loads for 9mm are subsonic for 147 and 158 grain rounds. The factory 115, 124 grain rounds are super sonic.
If you reload, you can load any weight bullet to the subsonic velocity level. More or less, at, or under, 1000 fps. Problems are that the light weight bullet loadin gto stay subsonic, as noted in this thread, may not have the energy to cycle a semi/full auto system.
A suppressor addresses the muzzle blast of a shot. When the round is supersonic, the muzzle blast may be suppressed, but the bullet "crack" as it breaks the sound barrier, provides a significant sonic signature. A subsonic round can be effectively suppressed. A supersonic one will be quieter through a suppressor, but still loud.

He may be planning load 115 subs, but what he said is that all he had to test was 115 white box. Of course they will be much louder than 147, as Strobro noted.

UPDATE: Found 1 lone box of 124gr, worked up a load that cycles and I am like . Subsonic is the key for sure. Thanks all!
HUGE difference between the 124 subsonic and white box 115gr. Yes, I am with the Octane!
