Maximum 10/22 barrel length that keeps bulk pack ammo subson

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

Maximum 10/22 barrel length that keeps bulk pack ammo subson

Post by pirated »

Whats the maximum barrel length for a Ruger 10/22 that will still keep standard velocity bulk pack type .22LR ammo subsonic?

I've heard 4.5", 5", and 5.5".

I've also heard that altitude is a determining factor? is that true?

Altitude matters a little, temperature maybe more depending on the powder.

Ruger barrels are a major variable in itself. The 10-22 has a long sloppy chamber and the barrels bore can vary. You will need to chronograph the barrel you are going to use.I found this to be all to true years ago and port barrels for velocity control. The advantage is a longer barrel will have more complete combustion of the powder and more suppression. I still must chronograph to get the ports right because of the variables in the barrels.I would start at 6" if you wish to avoid ports on the hottest day of the year.I shoot for 950fps as the golden speed to provide performance and have no sonic cracks.
The only reason after 243 years the government now wants to disarm you is they intend to do something you would shoot them for!

I agree, better suppression with longer barrels. One thing I've found in chronographing 22lr is longer barrels tend to have a larger standard deviation in muzzle velocity with bulk ammo which might translate to less accuracy at longer ranges but we're talking mostly about 100 yards plus.

Individual barrels can make a difference
as an example I had a redhawk and my buddy had a redhawk - both same barrel length and with every ammo we chrono'd his was between 100 and 150 fps faster - same "gun" but barrels were different enough to make a difference. I have a Ruger Mk 2 with 5 1/2 barrel and it goes super with bulk pack 22's.

I have 5 Ruger MK II pistols from 4.75, 5.5, and 10" lengths. I was doing some testing for the next project and found that any ammo I ran through the 4.75" barrel was subsonic. The 5.5" usually was super and I think the sub results from that length was related to ammo variation in the bulk packs. The 10" was always super sonic.

My 4.5" Ruger 22/45 is frequently super or trans sonic with bulk pack.

I chopped a charger barrel at 3.5" and it keeps everything bulk pack subsonic, but requires the backpressure of a can or booster to cycle the action with bulk pack ammo.

I can tell you that my 10/22 barrel is cut back to 16-1/2" and with the sparrow attached it's still cracking with the Fed. bulk, W-W bulk, CCI Blazer bulk & all the rest of the HV ammo. However it's simply beautiful with the Standard Velocity stuff. Going to subsonic ammo doesn't make enough difference to warrant it's use. As some have mentioned the particular barrel will have some to do with velocity......slow or fast. They say that 16" is the optimum length for a 22 lr. rifle barrel. My Buckmark is cut back to 4" and I have a S&W M&P 22 pistol with the standard 4" barrel. Both stay subsonic with the all the Bulk ammo previously listed.

:(

Does anyone offer a shorter barrel for the AR15? All I see is 4.75"

Please excuse my ignorance. When I started playing w cans, I took the advice often given here and bought CCI SV which does work in my 4" High Standard and in my 16.5" Savage FVSR. (Fortunately I bought some for the back store!)

Is there a significant difference between bulk pack and SV?

Yes
standard vel is around 1040 to 1080 with most brands
Hi velocity is 1100 up
but not always

Did lay in a decent supply summer of 2012 while it was cheap ... now I wish I'd bought twice as much! 22 LR is just too much fun ;-)
