Suppressor Help

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Suppressor Help

Post by KiloWhiskey64 »

I am going to purchase a suppressor made to use with the 300 WM and/or 7.62. The three suppressors I am considering are the AAC MK13-SD, Surefire SOCOM 762 RC, and the Gemtech Quicksand. The guns for it to be used on are, a Remington 700 PSS in 300 Wm (not sure if I would ever try to use on this one, even if I could). The weapons I do intend to use it on for certain are a Springfield M1A, AR15 in 300 Black- 16 inch barrel and a 9 inch 1:8 barrel, AR15 in 556/223-16 inch barrel and a 10.5 inch barrel. I would like to utilize a setback mount on the 300 Black that has the nine inch barrel, and if my homework is correct that only leaves me the Gemtech as an option. I have all the pieces except the quadrail for this gun so a setback is not mandatory but would look sharp.
What are your thoughts on the quality of these suppressors as they compare to each other. I am new to this so any help would be appreciated, also how well does a suppressor work with multiple calibers for the smaller rounds.

Here are some thoughts...

1. You can mount an AAC silencer like the 762SD-N6 and MK13-SD inside a hand guard, you just have to rig up a way to push the ratchet lever to remove. A friend of mine did this with a cardboard poster tube. You push the tube over the silencer, twist it to engage the ratchet lever, then unscrew the silencer.

2. The M1A is not a super great silencer platform. Back pressure can beat the op rod and cause a lot of blowback. Gemtech is the only company I can think of that makes a native mount for the odd thread pattern on the muzzle, HOWEVER, there is a company that makes an adapter to 5/8x24 (a more normal 7.62 silencer thread pattern).

3. The Gemtech is NOT rated for 300WM. Also, with the recent stories of them coming unglued (welds cracking, end caps unscrewing, they are not actually glued together :) ), I'd be weary of shooting WM through one. However, a friend has one and it's a nice silencer, just a bit dated by todays standards. The Bi Lock mount has a TON of thread patterns and it is very versatile.

If I were you, I would look into some of the thread over brake designs:

http://griffinarmament.com/silencers/30cal/recce-7/ (may only be rated to 308?)

http://griffinarmament.com/silencers/30cal/phs300/ (Really "fat" can at 1.7" dia. May not fit under hand guards)

http://www.suppressedarmament.com/762-s ... biter.html (The Arbiter may be the way to go! 1.5" dia would fit under some hand guards (I use 1.5" silencer under a Samson Evo rail system) and the TOMB model would allow various mounting thread pitches while allowing easy of "blind" mounting, and it's rated up to 300WM)

I chose the Griffin RSTA, it's built like a tank, however the reflex design would not work with most M1A's.

I have a Gemtech Sandstorm (thread on version of the Quicksand) I've used it on a 300 BLK, 308 bolt, 5.56 AR and SIG,and 308 Keltec RFB.It's very light weight, shorter than most, as quiet as any other, and never any problem with welds. Dated? Maybe, but when metered side by side it rates as good or better than everything else. I've also handled and shot an SAS Arbiter on my RFB and liked it a lot. You won't go wrong with either.

Thank you chrismartin and dtom29 for your input. I do like the SAS Arbiter and feel at this point it may be the best choice. It , the AAC MK-13 and the Griffin PHS.300Mag appear to be the only ones mentioned that handle up to a 300win mag. Are the brakes for the Arbiter and for the PHS.300Mag tunable.
If I use the Spikes BAR rail, the I.D. appears to be 1.79 inches and the Griffin can is 1.7 inches. Is that narrow margin a pipe dream?
chrismartin: "Sweet" 300 Black and a lot of good info.
dtom29: I agree that the Gemtech Sandstorm or Quicksand is probably of the best quality, just not sure it can handle the 300WM.
