Can you use a thermal scope with a suppressor?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Can you use a thermal scope with a suppressor?

Post by Casper »

So random question, is it possible to use a thermal optic in conjunction with a suppressor on a rifle or does the suppressor create too much heat?

Even some of the first Military Lab development prototypes could
discern figures even with environmental scintillation. The
field must have surely progressed way beyond that initial stage.

It will in instructive if anyone has present imagery to show.

How much mirage you get probably depends on how many rounds you fire rapidly.

Mirage can interfere with normal optics so if you're worried about it get a wrap for your suppressor.

To improve image quality, you can wrap the suppressor in fabric like a wet rag or burlap. Or there are pieces of flat plastic that Benchrest shooters use above the barrel to block mirage from reaching the sightline.

Many a feral pig have died proving that it works just fine. No wrap necessary.

I shoot thermal optics exclusively with silencers, and no issues whatsoever. Why you would be doing mag dumps with a thermal sight I have no idea???? But for wasting warm blooded things, you're gtg.

No mag dumps aren't really my thing I just don't have any experience with the thermal optics and wanted to confirm that they would work well in tandem.

Thanks for all the details guys.

Ok, so last night I did a mag dump suppressed with thermal at what appeared to be 60-100 wild hogs in an open field....it was a massacre!

no issues with the thermal, and there were 13 DRT when it was over, likely twice that many dead elsewhere. It was the most pigs I've ever seen in one place, red river bottoms of south Arkansas.

whoo hoo!

The first shot is nearly an Xray of the 3 baffles. Shows the 1st flat and 2 following cones w crossjet porting on AAC 416SD.

Anyone else notice the far field mirage on BOTH the visual AND IR band footage from 44sec - 1min08sec? Too bad they didn't show footage down the sightline. It would have made a good comparison.

The HogRush vids show a lack of mirage from can through sightline. But they don't list magnification, plus they are at night. So, no referance to distance or ground emitted/reflected IR as compared to 1st vid.

And the rest are migrating to Dallas at high speed :)

Interesting to know there were no mirage issues with the thermal.

The thermal camera used in my video was mounted on a mast on a jeep so it could not be used to get and other angles.

My post was centainly no criticism, just wistful thinking.

Since you used an IR cam instead of IR scope, is there any difference in image stabilization? (Re the far field mirage I noted above.)

Suppressor heat doesn't seem to trouble IR. Do IR scopes have some way to damp or compensate for magnified, Long Range views?
