How do you improve silencers?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

How do you improve silencers?

Post by XLmoby »

Hello,
i am from Germany and have a question about your silecner laws.
First you design the silencer (Drawing) , then you fill out the form send it to ATF and pay 200$ tax.
When it is aproved, you are allowed to build the silencer.

But only the design that you send to ATF.

Right?

How do you improve the silencer then?
Pay a nother 200$ and wait for 6 Month before you can start building?
Are you allowed to put other cones or baffles in you silencer?

Sorry for my poor english writing

Regards

You do not need to send the design to ATF, only the basic specs (overall length and caliber). However, once you've built it, you're stuck with it--you aren't allowed to make new baffles or otherwise modify it without paying another $200 tax to make another silencer. The other option is to be licensed as a manufacturer. In that case you pay an annual tax, and can make all the silencers you want without an additional per-item tax.

From what I've seen in the silencer industry you improve performance with HDR photography, gun pseudo-celebrities using your product, and wildly overstated claims of performance.

Best things we heard at SHOT from guys that, most likely, make their cans in their garage or basement:

"So how do your cans meter compared to say a Spectre II or Element(insert whatever we were comparing them to)"

"Oh we meet or exceed their performance"

"Where are your meter results"

"uh, oh, uh, we didnt bring those"

"ok have a nice day"
