I am waiting on the ATF for my can and was planning on using Ruger's Gunsite Scout Rifle as as a host. I saw some things on the blog that led me to send an email to AAC about the host..... they replied:
'Unfortunately we do not warranty the use of any of our silencers on the Ruger GS......
"
That being said, any recommendations on a .308/7.62 host?
AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?

Re: AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?
Remington 700 AAC-SD or Savage 10FCP, FP-SR, etc....
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Re: AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?
If looking for a similar rifle, the Mossberg MVP 308
The 700 AAC can be converted to mags (pricy or cheap) but the barrel is heavy .

Interesting. I wonder why? Anyone from AAC care to chime in on why the RGSR isn't favored?

Re: AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?
This is what I was told in the email....
We have examined/modeled the muzzle of the Ruger Scout rifle in .308. It has an oddball length of 5/8-24 thread (.694), and an inadequate (Ø.688 diameter) perpendicular shoulder surface behind the threads for properly indexing a flash hider, muzzle brake, or direct thread silencer. The existing Ø.688 shoulder provides 0.007” (that’s seven thousandths of an inch) per side of shoulder contact. That’s if everything is concentric and machined perfectly. We optimally want a Ø.750 minimum diameter shoulder behind the threads for a 5/8-24 thread that will yield ~.038” per side of contact.

Re: AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?
Interesting. I'd think the difference in thread length (.054") could be taken up by a properly machined short spacer that could also act as a larger bearing surface for the mount.
I guess its just the variation in manufacturing that you have when you thread with the intention of using a flash hider/muzzle brake versus a suppressor. I know guys that have various cans on their RGSRs (including Cyclones and SDN-6s) and have had no issues; I've also read of guys that had issues with the front sight base interfering.
Kinda have to wonder what is going on at Ruger; they get the threading right on their MkIII and 22/45s, but the threads on the 10/22 barrels are to 5.56 specs. I'll reach out to my contacts at Ruger to see if they have any ideas.
Which begs the question...is there an 'industry standard' for muzzle threads? AAC has their specs, Silencerco has theirs...I'm sure there are others. What would be the best 'reference' spec?

Wonder if the Ruger American Predator is the same.

Based on the feedback here and from the gun shop I've been buying Class III toys from and relying on for guidance.... now leaning towards waiting till I have the extra dollars and going with an AR style 308...by the time I spend money on upgrading a Rem. 700 to what I'm looking for....I might as well wait and get the additional capacity and the benefit of a semi auto platform.
If nothing else, I have the benefit of time courtesy of the ATF.

Re: AAC 762 SDN-6 ..... which 308/7.62 rifle?
It's not just the threads, apparently the taper is an issue. I had a similar experience with the ruger scout and a surefire. It ended up taking a custom spacer to make it work: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=123015&p=882161&hil ... ty#p882161
The ruger is an excellent host. Good luck!
