Stuck piston

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Stuck piston

Post by Prince Yamato »

Last night, I decided to clean my Ti-rant 9s in anticipation of shooting it today. The end cap came off fine. Then I go to remove the piston and the back of nd of the can is stuck. A monkey wrench only marred the finish, so I tried a strap wrench... Not budging. I'll probably just send it to aac, but does anyone have any other advice to "unfreeze" the piston? I can't get the back end of the can off.

Try soaking it in Kriol for a bit.

Kroil overnight then use a propane torch to put a little heat in it(it doesn't need to be real hot).

Sounds like it's carbon locked. Does the piston housing get removed and cleaned often?

Success! Brought it to local gunshop. They stuck it in a vice and managed to get the bottom off. There's your non-event of the day.

The moral of the story is to clean my silencer more often.

As others have stated, use Kroil as well when it happens again (we all know it'll happen again).
Kroil is an amazing penetrating oil, and a small bit goes a very long way.

You'd think that this would be mentioned more explicitly in the manual. Something along the lines of, "Your can is going to get filthy, you should clean it after every one or two range visits." This is probably why cans are $50 in Europe. Heinrich's can gets stuck, he shrugs his shoulders, throws it away, goes back to store and buys a new one. Also, no NFA, but same idea.

The Tirant manual does say to clean the A.S.A.P system after every 500 rounds of use.

I may or may not have read that. :D

It doesn't mention catastrophic locking of the piston though. Glock says to clean their guns regularly and you don't have to.
